Two Dean of Students Office leaders named
UW-La Crosse students returning to campus in fall will find two new leaders in the Student Life Office.
Greg Phlegar will become dean of students and Kara Ostlund will become assistant dean of students.
Phlegar is currently associate dean of students at Clemson University in South Carolina. Prior to Clemson, he was associate dean of students and director of the Office of Student Conduct and Campus Values at Denison University in Ohio.
Phlegar received a Bachelor of Arts in religious studies from the College of Wooster and a Master’s of Education in college student personnel services from the University of Louisville. His UWL position is effective July 24.
“Greg is an experienced and accomplished higher education professional with 20 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs,” says Vitaliano Figueroa, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
As dean of students, Phlegar will oversee the Office of Student Life including student conduct, Title IX, first-year experience, violence and prevention, wellness and academic support case managers.
Ostlund is currently a hall director at UW-Eau Claire. Prior to that appointment, she served as associate dean of students and director of conduct at Catawba College. Her UWL position takes effect July 18.
Ostlund earned two degrees from Appalachian State University: a bachelor’s in family and consumer sciences, secondary education and a master’s in college student development with a focus in student affairs. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.
As assistant dean of students, Ostlund will be responsible for implementing and administering the UW System Code of Conduct for all reports of academic and non-academic misconduct. She will also provide oversight and implementation of Student Life Office compliance needs, including the Clery Act and the Annual Security Report, as well as other federal, state and UW System legal requirements.
Both positions were created through a restructuring of two previous positions within the Division of Student Affairs.
