Comedy addresses guns, God and politics

The UWL Theatre Arts Department will stage "Church and State," a timely new play about politics, faith and the power of social media. The “serious comedy” by Jason Odell Williams is a witty, thought-provoking look at the politics of religion and gun control, and the danger and power in telling the unfiltered truth.

Church and State will run at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 31-Nov. 2 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 in Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall, 1615 State St. A post-show discussion will be held immediately following the Friday, Nov. 1, performance.

Three days before his bid for re-election, in the wake of a school shooting in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, a Republican U.S. senator makes an off-the-cuff comment to a blogger that gets leaked on Twitter, calling into question the senator’s stance on guns and God. As his devoutly Christian wife and liberal Jewish campaign manager try to contain the damage, this look at how religion influences politics and how politics has become a religion is simultaneously funny, heartbreaking and uplifting.
