Two new student representatives were appointed to the UW System Board of Regents. One representative, Katie Pointer, of De Pere, Wis., is a former UW-La Crosse student.

Gov. Scott Walker recently announced the appointments of two student representatives to the UW System Board of Regents. One representative, Katie Pointer, of De Pere, Wis., is a former UW-La Crosse student. “I am pleased to appoint these two outstanding students to the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents,” Walker said. “I am confident that both appointees will draw on their own knowledge and experiences to better the UW System and work toward an education system that our state can be proud of.” Pointer will continue her education at UW-Madison this fall after spending one year studying political science, public administration and finance at UW-L. She was a freshman senator on UW-L’s Student Senate and vice chair of the College Republicans. She also served as an intern and associate finance director for Ron Johnson’s Senate campaign last year. She is currently a summer intern for the Republican National Committee in Washington, D.C. She also served as a volunteer on mission trips for the First United Presbyterian Church and has been active in other community organizations and events. Pointer will replace Aaron Wingad and serve a two-year term as the traditional student representative. Troy Sherven, of Oregon, is a student at UW-Stout and Manager of Information Systems for MCD, Inc. in Madison. He earned his associate degree in business administration from Madison Junior College of Business in 1994 and then entered the workforce. After 20 years at work, Sherven opted to continue his education. He is a husband and father to three children. Sherven will serve a one-year term, filling a vacant seat as the non-traditional student representative. The Board of Regents establishes policies and rules for governing the System, sets admissions standards and reviews and approves university budgets, among other duties. Board members attend eight regular meetings per year, serve on special committees, serve as liaisons with at least two UW institutions, and perform related duties.
