Students present, display research Aug. 10

It may be called summer break, but UWL students such as Elizabeth Harlos, Megan Eberle and Harold Hart have been busy at work — conducting research. They plan to share their projects at UWL’s Summer Research Expo from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at UWL’s Centennial Hall. Poster sessions will be from 10 a.m.-noon in Hall of Nations. Among the many posters on display, Harlos, a Mathematics and Statistics student, will share her applied analytical research related to the National Cancer Database. Hart, Physics, will share his work related to how the infrastructure of a cell influences its function. And Eberle, Biology, will share her work developing a new assay using zebrafish that could lead to a reduction of costs associated with evaluating environmental contaminants. McNair scholars present UWL McNair Scholars program students will give 15-minute oral presentations in 1403 Centennial Hall. McNair scholars from the College of Liberal Studies will present from 9:30-11:15 a.m. and those from the College of Science and Health from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Among the presenters is McNair Scholars Mikka Nyarko and Cecilia Moreno, who first met as part of UWL's First Year Research Exposure program four years ago. They will present collaborative research they are working on with Gundersen Health System’s Global Partners program at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, in 1403 Centennial. Their work aims to improve health literacy and access to cancer screenings for women in the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua. The students conducted a literature review that found proper programming and outreach is possible to educate women and health care providers in this region. They aim to participate in the building of a program that will address the health disparities for women in Matagalpa region, and they plan to implement the program during a Global Partners visit to Matagalpa in fall 2017 and spring 2018. They are working with Keely Rees, professor of Health Education and Health Promotion, on the project.
