Chris Finn remembers long afternoons in the 1980s in his Whitefish Bay backyard. The 10-year-old imagined he was Brazilian Football Star Pele winning the World Cup as he kicked a soccer ball against the garage. He dreamed one day he, too, would lead a team to victory in the worldwide soccer competition.

OCW to host 'A Day of Giving' food drive for UW-L food pantry

UW-L's Organization of Campus Women (OCW) is hosting a "A Day of Giving" food drive for UW-L's Helping Our Own food pantry. Boxes for donations will be available at the Chancellor's All-University. After Jan. 18, boxes labelled "A Day of Giving" will be available throughout campus. OCW members will pick up all donations Tuesday, Feb. 14. Since 2003 UW-L's Helping Our Own food pantry has provided food and other items at no cost to students who are struggling financially. The numbers of students using the service has increased by approximately 100 users each semester. This past semester approximately 449 students used UW-L's food pantry. That's an increase of more than 230 students since fall 2010. Artwork of food in boxes. Some of the more popular items needed by students include:
  • Cereal (any assortment or brand)
  • Pasta noodles and tomato sauce
  • Quick meals (such as Hamburger Helper) or microwavable dishes
  • Peanut butter and Jelly
  • Canned fruit
  • Desserts and snack foods, such as chips, crackers, pretzels, fruit snacks, jello, pudding
  • Toiletries and toilet paper
Last year 541 items were donated from the OCW "Can for a Cookie" drive to help stock the food pantry. The pantry typically gets food each month from the Hunger Task force, but also receives donations from other sources including UW-L faculty and staff, the UW-L volunteer service organization Trick-or-Treat for Cans on Halloween, the Roncalli Newman Catholic Center, Golden Key International Honour Society and Chartwells. The pantry is a confidential service; however, students need to bring a UW-L ID to verify student status. No information is recorded or disclosed. The center is located in the Leadership and Involvement Center, 221 Cartwright Center and is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday while school is in session. For more information and to donate to the pantry, call 785.6600. Helping Our Own is run by Leadership and Involvement Center staff and volunteers. The pantry is always looking for student volunteers to spread the word. Students interested in this volunteer opportunity, should contact the Leadership and Involvement Center by phone, email or by visiting the pantry.
