Health advocates promote resources for November Lung Cancer Awareness Month

LungForce artwork. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month — an opportunity to reflect on the toll lung cancer takes on Wisconsin families every year. To honor those taken by lung cancer and to prevent future deaths, UW-L is reminding tobacco users that free resources are available to help them quit and to help prevent young adults from using tobacco. Lung cancer is now the number-one cause of cancer death for both men and women, according to the 2014 Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health. The report also shows almost nine of 10 lung cancers are caused by smoking. Another finding from the report is smokers today are more likely to develop lung cancer than those 50 years ago. Helping people quit smoking and preventing youth and young adults from starting could make a great impact on lung cancer in the future. That’s why a group at UW-L is working with Spark, Wisconsin’s young adult tobacco prevention program, toward a tobacco-free campus policy. The policy would make it easier for students, faculty and staff who want to quit at UW-L to do so, and help prevent young adults from starting. While addiction can take a powerful hold on tobacco users, it can be beaten with the help of free resources. On Nov. 18, Kris Hayden of the UW-Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention visited campus to provide cessation support training to UW-L Wellness Coordinator Kate Noelke and interested students on campus. The Wellness Resource Center encourages individuals who smoke or use other tobacco products to stop in to 149 Graff Main Hall, to visit the Student Health Center, or call the Wisconsin Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT NOW for free assistance. In addition to receiving personal coaching, Quit Line callers can also receive a starter pack of quit smoking medications. Evidence shows that the combination of quit-smoking counseling and FDA-approved medications such as nicotine gum, patches and lozenges are the most effective way to successfully quit. And progressive policies, like a tobacco-free college campus, are proven to decrease tobacco use rates. For more information on lung cancer or UW-L’s efforts to pass a tobacco-free campus policy, contact Noelke at knoelke2@uwlax.edu.

Healthy holiday eating

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Make your holiday a healthier one by following the tips provided by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:
  • In preparation for a big holiday party or feast, do not skip meals throughout the day as this may result in overeating.
  • Be sure to eat breakfast. Research shows that those who eat this important morning meal consume fewer calories through the day.
  • Include lots of fiber in your diet by eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains. High-fiber foods are high in volume and will satisfy hunger, but are lower in calories.
  • Think before getting seconds and thirds. According to WebMD, it takes about 20 minutes from the time you start eating for your brain to send out signals of fullness.
  • Use a smaller plate to avoid overeating. Smaller plates allow you to put less food on your plate and encourage proper portion sizes.
  • Fill your plate with healthy items first. Fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables and then add your main entrée. This will help you not consume as many calories overall.
Remember, great food is only part of what makes Thanksgiving so great. Be sure to spend quality time with those who mean the most to you.   Human Resources artwork.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to share with students the library's one-minute video that explains off-campus access. The library also has a Web page that provides information and troubleshooting tips for off-campus access.
