Happy Rain Theatre Co. presents a different kind of love story

The UWL student-run Happy Rain Theatre Co. will perform Gruesome Playground Injuries, a short play by Rajiv Joseph that explores why people hurt themselves and others. The play runs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, and Saturday, Sept. 2, in Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall, 1615 State St. Since its premiere in Houston and debuts in New York and Los Angeles, the play with a "different kind of love story" has received good reviews. Gruesome Playground Injuries follows the relationship of Doug and Kayleen in a series of nonlinear vignettes. The two characters, usually brought together by twisted fate of injury or heartbreak, share moments over the course of 30 years together. The play starts with the two as 8-year-olds in the nurse’s office. Each scene following tackles a different life hardship with compassion and humor. Over the course of their lives, the two discover depths of emotional scars, as well as physical ones, and must learn to handle collateral damage that comes with each. Admission is free, but general admission tickets are only available at the door beginning one hour before each performance. Seating is limited. Donations will be accepted to support future Happy Rain Theatre Co. productions. The Happy Rain Theatre Co. is a student-run production company of UWL theatre students and alumni. Past Happy Rain productions include "Dog Sees God," "Impassioned Embraces," "Edges" and "Three Changes."
