Hoeschler Tower’s clock dials, hands, movement hardware and dial illumination were upgraded this summer. The master clock controller was replaced, readying the 11-year-old tower for its second decade.

Hoeschler Tower’s clock dials, hands, movement hardware and dial illumination were upgraded this summer. The master clock controller was replaced, readying the 11-year-old tower for its second decade.
The clock, a campus icon, is now in good, working order, says Matt Lewis, UW-L director of facilities planning and management.
The Tower, southwest of Cowley Hall, includes a lantern, symbolizing the “Hanging of the Lantern” tradition that dates back to the 1930s. The campus centerpiece today is not only the focal point of the “Hanging of the Lantern” and “Lighting of the ‘L’” traditions, but also a popular gathering area for concerts, rallies and more. Janet Hoeschler, ’40, donated the funds to build the tower 11 years ago. She died in 2004 at the age of 86.
The clock also features a carillon that plays the school fight song and other traditional tunes.
