UW-L students organize fifth annual log rolling tournament

Watch amateur as well as internationally-ranked log rollers at the Fifth Annual Three Rivers Roleo Log Rolling Tournament Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Great River Landing in Onalaska.

Lantern summer issue is in the mail, online

Check out the summer issue of Lantern, UW-La Crosse’s alumni magazine. The Lantern is a biannual publication for alumni and friends. The publication gets its name from the Hanging of the Lantern, a homecoming tradition that shines as a beacon calling alumni home to campus each fall.

Broadcast students will train on new state-of-the-art equipment

UW-La Crosse Communication Studies students will see a welcome sight when they return to broadcast classes fall semester. UW-L has invested more than $77,000 in new equipment for TV production classes, as well as the student-run TV station and radio station.  

UW-L volunteers help Habitat for Humanity build house

UW-L employees joined a volunteer group Saturday, July 21, to help construct the 37th home built by Habitat for Humanity-La Crosse Area on Willow Street in Viroqua. The build was part of the Habitat for Humanity-La Crosse Area’s fourth annual Women Build project. UW-L Bookstore launches Hurley apparel; neon T-shirts on sale

UW-L's Bookstore has received MV Sport 100 percent cotton neon T-shirts selling for $7.95. Supplies are limited. The bookstore is also launching a new line of Hurley apparel that includes men’s caps, T-shirts and board shorts, along with women’s shorts, short-sleeve T-shirts and sweatshirts. If you need a UW–L emblematic gift or clothing item that the Bookstore doesn't have in stock, contact Carlena Goddeau at 785.8855 or cgoddeau@uwlax.edu.

Farewell, thank you celebration for Vang set for July 30

A farewell and thank you celebration will be held for Xiong Vang from 1-3 p.m. Monday, July 30, in 145 Graff Main Hall. Vang has served as the multicultural recruiter and adviser for teacher education students for the past 3-1/2 years.

Carol Beard retirement party to be held Aug. 8

A retirement party for Carol Beard runs from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in 235 Morris Hall. Refreshments will be served.
Beard  is retiring Aug. 10 as assistant to the dean in the College of Liberal Studies, a position she's held for more than 15 years. In that role, Beard has had the opportunity to work with four deans: Sandra Flake, John Magerus, John Mason and, currently, Ruthann Benson.
  Mark Sandheinrich, Biology; and Jim Wiener, River Studies Center; coauthored “Toxicity of Dietary Methylmercury to Fish —Derivation of Ecologically Meaningful Threshold Concentrations.” The article was published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, July 2012.

 OCW Book Club to discuss UW-L's Common Reading book Oct. 11

UW-L’s Organization of Campus Women Book Club will discuss "Enrique's Journey" by Sonia Nazario from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in Murphy's Mug. In the book, award-winning journalist Nazario recounts the true story of a Honduran boy who braves unimaginable hardship and peril to reach his mother in the U.S. The book is UW-L's Common Reading book and Nazario will speak on campus Thursday, Oct. 25. UW-L's Common Reading Program promotes a culture of reading for students. "Enrique's Journey" will be required reading for all UWL100 first-year seminar students and is available at the University Bookstore for $16 new and $12 used. Faculty may choose to incorporate the book into their courses as required or recommended reading. Book clubs will be organized in the residence halls and online. Participation in the OCW Book Club is open to all faculty, staff and students.  

Bookstore seeks temporary sales associates

The University Bookstore at UW-L seeks qualified candidates for temporary sales associates positions for the fall semester. Duties include:
  • Operating a cash register to total customer purchases.
  • Checking out and returning textbook rental titles.
  • Straightening merchandise, stocking shelves and pricing merchandise.
  • Greeting customers.
  • Answering the telephone.
Positions are 20 hours per week maximum. Pick up an application at the University Bookstore in the basement of Cartwright Center.
