Drumming up sounds from South Korea
Soojin Kim Ritterling, associate professor of
music education, was born in Jeonju, South Korea, an area rich in traditional Korean farmer’s dance and music. She learned how to play Janggu drums in grade school, along with all of her classmates. Today Ritterling teaches her UW-L colleagues and students the same rhythmic, musical phrases on the drum.

Florence Aliesch, Creative Services, received the 2011 Maxine Garvalia Excellence in Philanthropy Award at the Scenic Bluffs Chapter of the American Red Cross annual meeting on June 30. Aliesch served on the chapter's board for six years. The award honors those who have shown an exceptional commitment to the Red Cross movement through sharing of time, talent and treasures.
Keli Highland, Alumni Association, received the Paul Harris Fellow Award June 29 from the Valley View Rotary. The club selects one or two members who've gone above and beyond or "service above self" each year to honor. A $1,000 gift was given to the Rotary International Foundation in her name.

The university's Adopt-a-Highway crew picks up litter along a two-mile route on Highway 33 traveling through Middle Ridge to Korn Coulee Road, near the La Crosse-Monroe county line. All university employees and students and their families are welcome to join the crew! Work gets underway around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Korn Clements Road and Highway 33.
