Hänsch, of Germany, shared half of the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics for his contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy. This science allows researchers to determine the color of the light spectrum in atoms and molecules with extreme precision. It has led to a better understanding of the hydrogen atom — a key to deciphering the strange laws of quantum physics. Hänsch will give a public presentation related to his Nobel Prize winning research “Passion for Precision” at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in 1400 Centennial Hall. A reception starts at 4:30 p.m. A physics seminar “What can we do with laser frequency combs?” will be at 3:20 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, in 100 Cowley Hall. A reception starts at 3 p.m. in Cowley Hall Atrium. As part of the visit Hänsch will also speak to physics classes and meet with faculty and staff. “I think it’s important for our students to interact with a Nobel Laureate —The Nobel Laureates who have visited in the past have all been very down-to-earth. They show us that they are humans too,” says Gubbi Sudhakaran, UW-L physics professor and chairman of the department. Hänsch is the 12th Nobel Laureate featured in UW-L’s distinguished lecture series in Physics. The UW-L Foundation, Department of Physics, the College of Science and Health and Wettstein's sponsor the series that aims to bring physicists to campus who can inspire and enrich the careers of students, faculty and others in the community. Hänsch is a Director at the Max-Planck-Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany and is the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Professor in the Department of Physics of Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany.
