Soul singer, songwriter to perform at UW-L
Singer, songwriter and pianist Joanna Burns will perform at UW-La Crosse’s Campus Activity Board’s 1, 2, 3 Thursdays event. She will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in the Cellar, in Cartwright Center. Admission is free. Read more »

Have an adventure during Winter Break 2014
Adventure is out there, and UW-La Crosse’s Outdoor Connection can lead the way. During the past six years, Outdoor Connection has offered a dogsledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trips across the Boundary Waters in Minnesota. This year, they are adding two more trips to the agenda: canoeing and backpacking in central Florida and backpacking the Black Creek Wilderness in Mississippi. Read more »

Student GIS Poster and Map Competition Dec. 6
The Department of Geography and Earth Science is hosting the Student GIS Poster and Map Competition from 9 a.m.-noon Friday, Dec. 6, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. The event will showcase a variety of GIS and mapping applications. The poster presentations will be followed by research talks in room 339 Cartwright Center on GIS and geovisualization by guest speakers Carl Sack, UW-Madison; and Thomas Pingel, Northern Illinois University. The event is free and open to the public.
'Physical and Mental Health at any Size' is topic of Dec. 6 Brown Bag Lunch Film Series
Kim Soumar from Residence Life will facilitate "Physical and Mental Health at any Size” at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Join the conversation on the first Friday of every month to discuss contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues in the Office of Campus Climate's year-long series “Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts.” Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and are welcome to come late or leave early.
Films range from TED Talks to documentaries and typically last less than 45 minutes and are then discussed. The film series is free and open to everyone.

Next Album Encounters is Dec. 6; ‘Winter Wonders’ is December Public Program
The next Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature John Lennon’s “The John Lennon Collection” at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for December is ”Winter Wonders.” The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 7, 14 and 21. The Climate Crisis and American Health to be discussed at Dec. 9 talk
Climate change is affecting many aspects of our lives including our health, says Joel Charles. Charles, who has a Master of Public Health degree and is finishing medical training to become a physician, is educating others about the climate change-related health effects people are creating through the ever-increasing use of fossil fuels. Charles will present "The Climate Crisis and American Health: Moving From Threat to Opportunity" at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in 1400 Centennial Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.
Charles will discuss the most recent findings on the state of climate change and how it and current energy systems will impact health. Information will include policy prescriptions and actions citizens can take.
Charles is helping build a network to provide health professionals with effective ways to make health a central theme of the conversation on climate change. He is also organizing an effort to help climate activists become literate in the health impacts of climate change. Charles' talks are easy to understand, yet provide valuable information for health professionals.

History Student Research Symposium set for Dec. 9
The UW-L History Department is showcasing undergraduates' research at the Fall 2013 UW-L History Student Symposium Monday, Dec. 9, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
The research is a culmination of students' experiences as UW-L History majors ending in a capstone history research seminar. This event is open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Chancellor's Open Forum to be held Dec. 10
Chancellor Joe Gow will hold an open forum for the campus community from 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in 1400 Centennial Hall. In addition to updates on the latest UW System news from Madison, Chancellor Gow will answer questions and address other topics of interest. Chancellor Gow has granted one hour release time to attend this event. Work with supervisors to ensure office coverage.Graduating seniors' exhibit closes Dec. 11
The artwork of 10 UW-L art students is featured in the “Wanted: Artists of Conviction” senior exhibition in the University Art Gallery on the first floor of the Center for the Arts. Changes made for Cleary Alumni & Friends Center reservations
Changes in staffing have forced operational changes to the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center as it relates to hosting events. There will no longer be a designated building manager so the facility will go off-line for hosting events after hours. Daytime events may still be scheduled by all campus units.
What you need to know:- Reservations for the Strelczyk Great Hall, the Allen Conference Room, the Chancellor’s Dining Room, the Gathering Place and the Courtyard will now be handled by University Reservations. To reserve those rooms, call 608.785.8892.
- The Administrative Conference Room will be handled by the Alumni Association. To reserve it, call 608.785.8489.
- Events already scheduled will be honored through the spring and will be handled by two student building managers.
- Support on the day of the event will be handled by the Alumni Association support staff.
- The building will be available from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Only UW-L specific events may be considered for exceptions.

Public Health, Community Health Education programs being reviewed for re-accreditation; review and comment on self-study documents online
UW-L's Master of Public Health and Community Health Education programs are being reviewed by the Council on Education for Public Health for national re-accreditation. A site visit will occur on March 24-25, 2014. As a part of the review process, university and community members can review and comment on the preliminary self-study documents at www.uwlax.edu/sah/hehp/mph. Happy 36th birthday, Golden Key International Honour Society
Congratulations to the Golden Key International Honour Society for its 36th birthday Nov. 29. UW-L's chapter of the Golden Key (GK) International Honour Society held its New Member Recognition/Induction ceremony Oct. 25 in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Cecilia Manrique, Political Science/Public Administration, chapter co-adviser and International Leadership Council past president, delivered the greetings from GK headquarters. She and Carla Burkhardt, College of Science and Health, chapter co-adviser, introduced the GK officers. Five new honorary members (HMs) were inducted.

More computers available for end of semester
The library is opening room 30, a computer classroom in the basement of the library, to provide more computers during the busy period at the end of the semester. Room 30 will be open from 6 p.m.- close starting Sunday, Dec. 1. Students can use the desktop computers there. As a pilot project, Room 12, in the library basement, has been converted to a silent study room. Many students ask for an environment even quieter than the library’s designated quiet areas, so this room is intended to answer that need. The silent room should be completely silent, with no talking, whispering, group work, etc. All cell phones and devices should be silenced, and the door to the room should be kept closed. The room seats up to 12, but people should not try to conduct any collaborative work while in the silent room. If a conversation is necessary, students should leave the room before having that conversation. More information is available at the library home page or at the library blog at http://librarynews.
OCW Holiday Social set for Dec. 12; campus community invited
UW-L's Organization for Campus Women is hosting a Holiday Social from 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Children from the Campus Child Care Center will sing at 11:30 a.m.
Refreshments and desserts will be provided by OCW.
OCW is collecting items for the Humane Society Wish List. Bring donations to the social.
