A new year; gratitude and growth displayed at Gow’s all-university address
UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow’s All-University Address opened with a standing ovation. UW-L faculty and staff rose to honor members of the La Crosse Fire Department who lined up in the front of Graff Main Hall Auditorium. The department responded to two fires at UW-L within the last year. “Footloose” performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts.
Wisconsin DPI grants foster partnership between UW-L faculty, K-12
Two Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction grants will help UW-L faculty partner with K-12 schools to help students meet national science and math standards. The grants, totaling $348,000, were awarded to UW-L’s Math and Physics Departments to work with four areas school districts and eleven schools in northern Wisconsin. Through workshops, academic year follow-up sessions and discussions about student evaluation and teaching strategies, UW-L faculty will help teachers learn about and implement the standards.
NY pianist to join local jazz greats
A UW-L alumnus and accomplished New York pianist will return to campus to perform a jazz recital with university faculty. Pianist Dave Marck will be featured in the Greg Balfany/Karyn Quinn and Friends Jazz Recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, in Annett Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for jazz student scholarships.

Academic Advising Center offers walk-in advising this week — no appointment needed
UW-L's Academic Advising Center has Walk-In Advising — no appointment necessary — this week (Sept. 4-10) for students having general questions about their academic progress and academic plans. Blood drive on campus Sept. 5 & 6
UW-L's Leadership and Involvement Center, in conjunction with UW-L’s Fraternity Sorority community and the American Red Cross, will be holding a campus-wide blood drive from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 5 and 6, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
The goal this year is an average of 160 units of blood per day. For every unit of blood donated, three lives can be saved.
Refreshments, fruit and cookies will be provided for all who donate. Donors are encouraged to register ahead of time at www.redcrossblood.org but walk-ins are welcome. First-time donors should bring a valid photo ID. Previous donors are encouraged to bring their donor card.

Campus Climate Brown Bag Lunch Film Series begins Sept. 7
Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts UW-L's Campus Climate is hosting a year-long “Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts. Join the conversation on the first Friday of the month to discuss contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues. Films range from TED Talks to documentaries and typically last fewer than 45 minutes followed by discussion. The first event is set for 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Centennial’s Hall of Nations. Jason Bertrand, Wellness Resource Center, will facilitate “Spirituality & Making Meaning,” Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and are welcome to come late or leave early. Events are free and open to everyone. Film Series Events are presented and facilitated by friends and colleagues of Campus Climate. Professor Emeritus Cloyce Campbell
Professor Emeritus Cloyce Campbell died Aug. 30. Campbell worked at UW-L beginning 1956 and was instrumental in creating a Department of Economics and Business Administration within the College of Letters and Sciences. It is now UW-L's AACSB-accredited College of Business Administration. Cloyce taught management and marketing courses at UW-L and retired in 1981. In retirement he served in UW-L's CBA Silver Eagles group and has a UW-L Foundation Scholarship named after him. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at First Congregational Church, 2503 Main St., La Crosse, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Cloyce Campbell Scholarship Fund at the UW-La Crosse Foundation, the Salvation Army of La Crosse or the Shriners Hospital. UW-L student Sean Eric Schoonmaker, of Stillwater, Minn., was killed in a one-car crash Aug. 24 south of Hayward. There will be a candelight memorial for Sean at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the Hoeschler Clocktower (in case of rain at Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition). The Schoonmaker family will be at the candlelight memorial.
