The chair was decorated in quilt-like patterns because of Benson's love of quilting. A plaque on the chair reads: Our greatest single source of wealth is the minds and talent of our young people. — Isaac Stern "In appreciation for your many years of service to UW-L from the College of Liberal Arts chairs."[/caption]
College of Liberal Studies Dean Ruthann Benson came to UW-L in 1994 as UW-L’s new director of theatre. She moved into the CLS dean's office in 1998 as associate dean. Benson will step down from her position as dean June 30 to take a sabbatical and go back to teaching before officially retiring in December 2016.
Benson’s sabbatical in fall 2015 will take her back to her theatre roots. She plans to work on children’s theatre playwriting. Benson was a children’s theatre director in Florida for five years before pursuing a master’s of fine arts degree in arts management/theatre and a doctoral degree in fine arts and theatre. In spring 2016 and the following fall semester, Benson plans to teach half time and work on special projects for the provost.
An open house for Ruthann Benson will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, May 8, in 235 Morris Hall. A program begins at 3 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
