Those interested in traveling to Havana, Cuba, can now go with UW-La Crosse Extended Learning. The Cuba Travel Tour with UW-La Crosse, March 13–20, 2020, is open to all interested adult travelers. The registration deadline is Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019. Learn more at www.uwlax.edu/ex/cuba/

This eight-day experience into Havana will offer a greater, more nuanced understanding of the socioeconomic realities of present-day Cuba through the lens of contemporary cultural representations. Omar Granados, Ph.D., UWL professor of Latin American Cultural Studies and a native of Havana, will guide participants through the city’s economic, social, political life and the island’s thriving cultural scene.

With current U.S. Cuban sanctions, it has become increasingly difficult for U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba. Travel will occur under the Support for the Cuban People visa category, which allows U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba. Specific information regarding authorized travel may be found at https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/Pages/cuba.aspx

Two information sessions are being offered on the UWL campus. The information sessions will include:

  • Meeting Omar Granados, UWL faculty leader of the trip
  • Brief overview of Cuban history
  • Overview of the trip itinerary
  • Question and answer session

Information sessions will be held in 315 Graff Main Hall, UWL, 1725 State St., La Crosse, on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 2: noon–1 p.m.
  • Thursday, Oct. 3: 6–7 p.m.

The Cuba Travel Tour with UW-La Crosse highlights include:

  • Visit historical sites and museums
  • Interact with Cuban scholars and community activists
  • Tour a Cuban hospital, elementary school and a community rebuilding project in the Los Sitios neighborhood of Central Havana
  • Explore the UNESCO sustainable agriculture project, Las Terrazas
