Now the 1985 graduate will share those experiences so even more may discover the La Crosse Experience. Scott, ’84, is the new development officer in University Advancement. The Whitefish Bay resident began his new job Jan. 1, working from home to reach out to alumni and friends in southeastern Wisconsin and Chicagoland. “I’m really excited to get out in Milwaukee and the surrounding area to meet alumni and friends to enhance what we’re doing with education at UW-L,” Scott says. “We’re providing a high-quality education at a great value.” Campus has changed much since Scott arrived as a freshman in 1979. After graduating with a recreation administration major in five years he completed a master’s in higher ed administration at Colorado State University. He returned as Drake Hall’s residence hall director from 1987-89 and as a student services coordinator in Student Activities and Centers from 1991-96. Around these campus positions, he worked in student housing at the University of Florida, as executive director with the Fleck Foundation in Milwaukee and, most recently, as executive director of The Studios of Key West in Florida. Upon returning to Milwaukee in 2013 for family, he was excited to discover UW-L was looking for a development officer for the region. That excitement has transformed into his new position. For Scott, UW-L is an easy sell. “As a student and staff member I felt a good sense of community at UW-L,” he says. The campus helped him connect to his wife, Carolyn Fleckenstein, ’85. They had their first of four daughters while he was director of Drake Hall. (A resident took Carolyn to the hospital before heading home for Thanksgiving when Jay was across campus at a meeting.) He made further connections working in Student Activities and Centers. Scott feels others cherish their campus memories too. “Alumni had positive experiences through their academic departments and student organizations they were involved in,” he explains. “Many have a very fond memory of their La Crosse experience.” Scott believes those feelings are the compelling reasons so many alumni share their time, financial resources and enthusiasm about UW-L. “There are many ways alumni can reconnect to this great university,” he notes. Scott looks forward to helping others get involved. “People give their time and money to organizations that are well run and making a difference in lives,” he says. “UW-L does both.” Scott says the $15 million “Share the La Crosse Experience” scholarship campaign is a perfect time to give back and provide students funding for their education. For alumni, it’s the perfect opportunity to support an institution that shaped their personal lives and careers, says Scott. And it’s an investment in the next generation. “UW-L is in a good position for our alumni and friends to say they want to take part and make a difference,” he says.
