[/caption]UW-L's Statistical Consulting Center is celebrating a 10-year anniversary. The center is a resource for people on and off campus making data-based decisions. It also offers real-world statistical consulting experience for UW-L students. Over the years, the center has expanded, bringing in a director, launching a website and opening services to off-campus clients with a $126,000 UW System Incentive Grant. The SCC has been an exciting addition to UW-L mathematics curriculum because students can apply what is taught in classes as well as additional statistical procedures not covered in classes. Students develop professional verbal and written communication skills serving clients face-to-face and analyzing real-world statistical data. “The classroom is very much like practice, and many athletes will agree that while practice can be rewarding, it doesn’t match the thrill of actually getting in the game,” says David Reineke, director for the center’s on-campus clients. While the center is only 10 years old, statistical consulting services have been offered at UW-L for 20 years — beginning when Abdulaziz Elfessi, associate professor of Mathematics, started at UW-L in 1994. The center’s directors thank Dean Bruce Riley, who was chair of the Mathematics Department when the SCC was developed. He has “been very supportive every step of the way,” says Reineke. The center’s directors also thank Provost Heidi Macpherson, whose office supports release time for the SCC directorship, and colleagues in the Mathematics Department. The SCC provides advice and assistance in areas of sampling, experimental design, data modeling and analysis, as well as interpretation and written communication of results for projects that require statistical methods. Under the supervision of Mathematics Department faculty members, statistics majors and students with actuarial science concentration provide statistical consulting to those in need on or off campus.
