Symposium looks at land management ethics

A day-long symposium at UW-La Crosse will discuss ways to make good decisions about natural resource management. The Ethical Dimensions of Land Management symposium runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in 1300 Centennial Hall, 308 N. 16^th St. Get a detailed schedule.   The symposium is free and open to the public. Lunch seating is limited and reservations must be made in advance. The schedule allows time for networking and questions between talks. The symposium’s goal is to bring together a diversity of people to discuss making good decisions about natural resource management. Those invited include: resource managers and academics, scientists and philosophers, as well as students and their future employers. “We are excited about promoting dialog surrounding some thorny issues, such as conflicts between user groups or contrasting restoration goals,” says Samuel Cocks, UWL professor of philosophy and organizer of the event. The keynote address at 2:15 p.m. is "Field Philosophy and Land Ethics" by Professor Adam Briggle, an environmental ethicist from the University of North Texas. His focus will be a case study dealing with urban shale gas drilling and fracking. "In these kinds of land management issues, philosophy is always present but philosophers rarely are. Why is that?" asks Briggle.
