The State Building Commission has approved the design and construction of UWL’s new Science Labs Building and the renovation of the Center for the Arts main entrance with the addition of an ADA elevator.
Science Labs Building, Center for the Arts renovation receive final approval
La Crosse, Wis. – The State Building Commission has approved the design and construction of UWL’s new Science Labs Building and the renovation of the Center for the Arts main entrance with the addition of an ADA elevator. The approvals came during the SBC meeting Wednesday, Aug. 12, at State Fair Park. This is the final approval needed for both projects to move forward.

Science Labs Building
A new science facility will address a lack of space and severely deteriorating infrastructure in Cowley Hall, the existing physical and life sciences facility. When the facility was built in 1963, and added on to in 1968, fewer science programs were offered at UWL. The approximately 188,000 square-foot-building will be constructed on the parking lot north of the existing Cowley Hall, commuter lot 3.
Construction on the $82 million project, funded by state tax dollars, is scheduled to begin in spring 2016 and be completed in winter 2018.
Center for the Arts entrance update and elevator addition
This $1.4 million renovation project at the entrance of Center for the Arts will resolve safety hazards, accessibility issues and a failing retaining wall.
The project, funded by state tax dollars, will replace the existing concrete stairway and retaining wall and pedestrian walkway at the main entrance to Center for the Arts on the south side of the building. The update also includes an American Disabilities Act-compliant elevator and interior stairway at the entrance.
Currently, the entrance is only accessible by two groups of steep outdoor steps. The only elevator in the building to carry large items to the gallery is accessible through the ground level at the back of the building. Building occupants and the general public frequently mention the lack of ADA access to the main floor of the building as a significant problem.
Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2015 and be completed in early 2016.
