The third annual Global Initiatives Week will showcase La Crosse area’s cultural value, along with highlighting the economic and social impact of the region’s global connections through food, dance, art, film and speakers. Global Initiatives Week works to incite conversation, contribute to global awareness and inspire local action. Organizers hope attendees will volunteer with local organizations engaged in global work, develop cultural competence, and discover new ways to strengthen the region through global connections. The week kicks off Friday, Nov. 6, with a Global Celebration sponsored by the La Crosse Community Foundation Global Awareness Fund, at the Radisson Hotel. Events wrap up with a half-day conference promoting diversity in the workplace. More than 20 events are scheduled throughout the week. Free screenings of award-winning films, including the documentaries “Not My Life” and “Business of Being Born” are planned, along with the 5th Biennial UWL United Nations Association Film Festival. Additionally, Winona’s annual Frozen River Film Festival will hold a featured screening of Miss Tibet, in partnership with the Pump House. Other Global Initiatives Week events include a Global Friendships Celebration at the La Crosse Public Library, study abroad presentations on campus and a special presentation by spoken word artist Carlos Andres Gomez at Viterbo University. A number of local restaurants and businesses will offer discounts to those who mention “Global Initiatives Week.” Stop in at Dublin Square, Gracie’s, Grand Bluff Running, Hmong Golden Eggrolls, Indochinese Grocery Store, New Taste of India, and more to experience the region’s global connections through food and merchandise sales.
