UW-L’s Department of Theatre Arts production, "Antigone," does more than speak of ancient times and antiquated traditions. This spring the Toland Theatre will present a modern and relevant take on the old classic, taking inspiration from what Time magazine has deemed the “Year of the Citizen.”
"Antigone" by Sophocles will show at 7:30 p.m. April 20-21 and 26-28, with matinee performances at 2 p.m. Sundays, April 22 and 29. Performances are in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts.
The stage is set with the postwar city of Thebes in shambles. Kreon, brother and uncle of the late Oedipus, has risen to the throne in the aftermath of the battle between brothers Eteokles and Polyneices. Following the brothers’ deaths, Kreon decrees that only one shall be honored with a proper burial. This proclamation is met with resistance, especially by Antigone, the doomed heroine and sister of the rival brothers. Despite the consequences, Antigone defies her new king and performs the funeral rites for her brother, only to be condemned to death by imprisonment in a cave. This production is inspired by uprisings around the world and speaks to both the troubles and possibilities of our times.
Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday, April 16. Box office hours are 1- 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and one hour before show times. Admission is $4 for UW-L students, $12 for senior citizens and students of other schools and $14 for others. Tickets can be purchased at the box office in the lobby of the Center for the Arts or call 785.8522.
