Faculty, students see benefits of ‘Together Against Bullying’ website
Earlier this year, UW-La Crosse students and faculty teamed up with Gundersen Health System to launch a website dedicated to helping families and schools stop the bullying epidemic. Jeff Reiland, UW-L Psychology Department lecturer and family therapist at Gundersen, created the site, “Together Against Bullying,” with the help of a $62,000 grant from Kohl’s Cares. He enlisted four undergraduate interns to help him: UW-L students Alycia Brun and Corina Colon, along with UW-L recent graduates Karli Dahl and Caitlin Cullen. Read more » |
Networking event draws biophysics-related research
The mechanical properties of a molecule of DNA, the physics of a cell and new ways to teach science were all topics discussed at the first Biophysical Society Regional Networking event Saturday, Oct. 19 at UW-La Crosse. Murphy Library has new technology, more
Murphy Library received a technological upgrade over the summer. Several remodeled spaces and new resources are available. The biggest project, the School of Education’s Collaborative Learning Studio, provides the “ability to train the teachers of tomorrow with the state-of-the-art tools of today,” says Provost Heidi Macpherson. UW-L Screaming Eagles set Review Concert
The UW-La Crosse Screaming Eagles Marching Band will hold its Review Concert at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, in Mitchell Hall. Admission is free. The concert is a synopsis of the band’s season, which began Aug. 18. Since then, the band has given 14 performances. In addition to performing at football games, the Screaming Eagles participate in community events like Gundersen’s “Steppin’ Out in Pink,” Oktoberfest and exhibitions at high school band competitions in Wisconsin and Minnesota. UW-L session to look at what employers need to know about immigration reform, compliance
A Milwaukee attorney with more than a decade of immigration law experience will discuss new immigration reform legislation during a presentation at UW-La Crosse. Attorney Benjamin T. Kurten will speak on “Immigration Reform and Compliance: What Employers Need to Know” at noon Friday, Nov. 8, in the Strzelczyk Great Hall in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. A reception with Kurten begins follows his presentation at 1:15. The event, part of UW-L College of Business Administration Global Initiatives Week 2013 celebrations, is free and open to the public. Halloween-themed talk combines calculus and zombie attacks
Two UW-L math professors will give a Halloween-themed talk Wednesday, Oct. 30, that aims to show math isn’t all that scary. Mathematics faculty members Robert Allen and James Peirce will demonstrate how mathematical models can be used to predict how zombies and vampires could take over the human population. The talk “Zombies, Vampires and Math, Oh My!” will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in 100 Cowley Hall. Costumes are encouraged. Read more »

Forum on Campus Climate Survey set for Nov. 1
Two forums are being held to discuss the preliminary results of the Campus Climate Survey distributed to students and employees in spring 2013. The first was held Monday, Oct. 28. The second is from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in 337 Cartwright Center. Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook and author of the bestselling book "Lean In," will speak during a Livestream event from 6-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28. Watch the event on campus in 1400 Centennial Hall.
Sandberg will share her hopes for the next generation and answer questions submitted via Livestream. In addition, the Lean In team will introduce the Lean In on Campus program and tell students how to get involved.

CBA students' two-week food drive runs Oct. 28 through Nov. 8
A group of College of Business Administration students is organizing a food drive to benefit the UW-L food pantry and the La Crosse Hunger Task Force. The Student Advisory Council for the college will hold a food drive from Monday, Oct. 28, through Friday, Nov. 8. Boxes will be placed in seven department offices in the college, the CBA dean’s office and residence halls. Monetary donations are also accepted. The group will also have donation locations at Howes Diamond Jewelers and the People's Food Co-op downtown. The group will be at the People's Food Co-op in the afternoon and Howe's Jewelers in the evening Friday, Nov 8, to collect more donations and serve hot chocolate. This is the fifth year the group has organized a food drive. Last year the group raised approximately 575 pounds of food. The group aims to raise more than 600 pounds this year. As part of the food drive, CBA departments will compete to donate the most food. The winning department will receive coffee and doughnuts from Moka Friday, Nov. 15. A retirement reception will be held for UW-L Foundation Director of Collegiate Gifts Pat Stephens from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. For more than 35 years, Stephens has built relationships with UW-L alumni, friends and community members while raising funds for the UW-L Foundation. Student parents are topic of Nov. 1 brown bag lunch discussion
Self-Sufficiency Program Director Andrea Hansen will lead a discussion on student parents at a Friday, Nov. 1, brown bag discussion. The Campus Climate Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts is set for 11:30 a.m. in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Conversation on the first Friday of every month discusses contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues. Films range from TED Talks to documentaries and typically last less than 45 minutes, followed by a discussion. Film Series Events are presented and facilitated by friends and colleagues of Campus Climate and are free and open to everyone. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and are welcome to come late or leave early.
