The UWL Department of Theatre Arts will present its SummerStage production of the musical comedy, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Winner of the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical, the show celebrates an eclectic group of six teenagers vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.

"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" will run at 7:30 p.m. June 21-22 and June 28-29, with 2 o'clock Sunday matinees June 23 and 30. All performances are in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St.

At the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, students file into the auditorium in hopes to be the next champion of the very prestigious spelling bee. Rona, the host and 3rd annual Putnam champion, introduces the students. William Barfee spells his words correctly with the help of his “magic” waggling foot. Olive, the new girl with the absent parents, has the drive to prove herself. Marcy, a very gifted young lady, struggles with an unfortunate lisp. Follow the tweens as they spell their way through a series of ridiculous words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. With each contestant eliminated the pressure rises, and the children learn what it means to really be a winner.
