Morgan Slaback, left, and Alexis Boraas-Stueber, on scooter, joined 46 other students last week to participate in UW-L's Hybrid FastTrack Program led by Associate Math Professor Robert Allen and Math Professor Jennifer Kosiak. See more photos of this summer's group at http://goo.gl/Z5qshO.[/caption] Math counts for the 48 students who participated in the Hybrid FastTrack Program last week. They are the third cohort of FastTrack students who have participated in the hybrid summer mathematics enhancement program. The program is part of a UW System Growth Agenda grant through the Institute of Innovation in Undergraduate Research and Learning directed by Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs Bob Hoar. FastTrack allows incoming freshmen to develop their mathematical skills online for six weeks before meeting on campus for a one-week campus stay. The goal of the program is for students placed into MTH 050 or 051 to increase their skills in order to place into a higher mathematics class in the fall of their freshmen year that will be required for their academic program. During the on-campus stay, students continue to participate in mathematical activities before they retake the University of Wisconsin System Mathematics Placement Exam and meet with academic advisers to further assist with their academic planning for the fall semester. Associate Professors Robert Allen and Professor Jennifer Kosiak, both Mathematics, led this summer's sessions. An additional 46 students are participating in an online only version of the FastTrack Program through the College Readiness Math MOOC.

Meet the dietitian

Hello. My name is Katie Callahan and I am the new registered dietitian on campus. I was born in West Saint Paul, Minnesota, and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in nutrition with a concentration in dietetics from the College of Saint Benedict. I then went on to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, to complete my required dietetic internship. Here, I had different rotations in hospital, public health, and food service settings. In my spare time I like to attend aerobics classes (Zumba rocks!), hike, bike, travel (especially to Duluth, Minnesota), be on the water, read, cook and bake. My favorite aspects of nutrition are establishing relationships with others via health and wellness promotion, counseling individuals with dietary needs and/or nutrition concerns, and conducting group presentations. Luckily, I get to carry out my passions in my position here at UW-L. I could not be more excited to serve you, the UW-L campus, in any way I can. Do not hesitate to stop by my office in the Whitney Concourse to say hello and introduce yourself. — Dietitian Katie Callahan

MurphyLibraryNotes artwork. Schedule fall library instruction sessions

Every year, thousands of UW-L students benefit from hands-on instruction related to information research and library resources. Faculty and staff work with librarians to design sessions that meet the needs of their classes, and then they either bring their classes into the library or a librarian visits their classroom. To make instruction planning easier, visit the new Library Instruction Menu . The menu outlines major concepts, learning goals and the approximate time commitment for each concept. If you don't see something of interest on the menu, ask. Also, be sure to check out the revised Library Instruction @ Murphy library guide to locate additional information to meet all your library instruction needs.
The program gets very busy, especially in the opening weeks of the semester, so faculty and staff are encouraged to make arrangements as early as possible.
To schedule a library instruction session, use the form at the library website or email your information to libinstruct@uwlax.edu. The form is in a new location at the library's redesigned website, under the Services menu in the left-side navigation area. The direct link to the form is: http://www2.uwlax.edu/MurphyLibrary/Services/Forms/Library-instruction-request/

Walk-in tours available during opening week of classes

The library offers fast, no-registration tours for students, faculty and staff during the first week of the semester. Tours start in the library lobby at noon Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 2-5. Tours last about 20 minutes and cover the basic layout of the library, useful services, library collections and tips to effectively use the library. Everyone is welcome to participate in these informal tours. Physical Wellness artwork

Start the semester right starting Day  No. 1 … eat breakfast

Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Your body needs energy to perform well throughout the day. Breakfast gives your body energy and boosts your metabolism. A healthy breakfast is linked to health benefits such as weight control and improved performance.  Do not skip breakfast to lose weight. Studies have shown that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers. Not all breakfasts are created equally though. It is important to eat a healthy, well-balanced breakfast consisting of protein and/or whole grains instead of one loaded with fat and calories (i.e., donut, bagel with cream cheese, Danish, muffin, etc.). Try these quick breakfast ideas:
  • Yogurt with fruit and whole grain cereal
  • Whole grain cereal with low-fat milk and a banana
  • Whole grain bread with peanut butter and a glass of orange juice
  • Oatmeal with fruit and nuts
  • Scrambled eggs with whole grain toast and a piece of fruit
  •  Egg white omelet with vegetables
  • Whole grain bagel and a glass of low fat milk
Or these ideas for breakfast on the go:
  • Gogurt, individual serving yogurt or cottage cheese or string cheese
  • An apple, orange, banana, pear or plum with cheese or nuts
  • Granola bar with at least four grams of protein and fiber
  • Whole grain cereal in a baggie
  • Make-ahead smoothie
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Egg sandwich on whole grain bread or a tortilla
  • Whole grain bagel

 Thank you, custodians

A great big thank you to the campus custodial staff who came to Cartwright Center Aug. 25 to assist us with our flood. This would have overwhelmed our resources had it not been for your assistance with this emergency. We often forget to say thanks when people go above and beyond what is expected. The custodial staff at Cartwright would like you to know that your help was greatly appreciated. — The Cartwright Center Custodial Crew

Career Services Office recognizes internship advisers

The Career Services staff would like to thank the faculty and instructional academic staff listed below who voluntarily advised interns during fall 2013, spring 2014 and summer 2014. The Cooperative Education and Internship Program this past year generated 1,880 credits for academic departments. We sincerely appreciate the support that the Cooperative Education and Internship Program receives.
