Regents approve UW-L’s new student center; no taxpayer dollars will be used to fund $53 million project
The UW System Board of Regents approved the design and construction of UW-La Crosse’s new student center duringmeetings Thursday and Friday in Madison.No taxpayer dollars will be used to fund the estimated $53.3 million building, which will be entirely funded by student fees. In April 2012 UW-L students voted to build a new facility rather than repair Cartwright Center, the current student union, which opened in 1958 with additions in 1964 and 1985. Read more »

Eagle Alert technology comes to UW-La Crosse
A new technology-based program hopes to help students who might be struggling in college. The Eagle Alert system, rolled out earlier this semester, was created to provide students with feedback pertaining to academic or professional concerns, student potential and advising sessions. It also hopes to help retain students at UW-L and help all students graduate on time. This initiative was created by Firm Footing, a committee that addresses students who are likely to be at-risk for academic troubles and give them the resources they need to succeed. Read more »

Two UW-La Crosse professors are offering an intergenerational study tour to Rwanda this summer. Economics Professor Donna Anderson and Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages Barbara Rusterholz will lead the tour to Rwanda for students and others May 18-June 7, 2014. Read more »

UW-L grads to walk the stage Dec. 15
A total of 688 UW-La Crosse students are candidates for graduation during the 49th annual Winter Commencement. The 566 undergraduate students and 99 graduate students will walk the stage at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at the La Crosse Center, 300 Harborview Plaza, La Crosse. The ceremony includes graduates from UW-L's three colleges: the College of Business Administration, the College of Liberal Studies and the College of Science and Health. GIS poster competition showcases student research
Geography student Rachel Wozniak, from Milwaukee, researched breast cancer in Wisconsin for her poster in UW-L's first Geographic Information Science Poster Competition Dec. 6 in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. She used alcohol consumption, obesity, pollution and poverty level data to determine the areas in Wisconsin where there is a high probability of being diagnosed with breast cancer. "There were a lot of people who are being diagnosed with breast cancer and I wanted to know why," she said. "I found Milwaukee does have the highest probability of being diagnosed with breast cancer." The senior was one of 14 students in the competition hosted by the Geography and Earth Science Department. Events that day also included guest speakers from UW-Madison and Northern Illinois University who talked about Wikimapping and mapping from airborne laser scanners. Geography and Earth Science Assistant Professor Gargi Chaudhuri says the department would like to make the competition an annual event at a bigger scale. "It's a good opportunity to invite undergrads from other Wisconsin system schools, too, for participation," says Chaudhuri. "I hope this event will help to spread the message about GIS and cartographic applications and encourage more students in geography and from other departments to take these courses in future." Posters are being judged by those who attended the competition, along with geography, computer science and biology faculty. The UW-L History Department is showcasing undergraduates’ research at the Fall 2013 UW-L History Student Symposium Monday, Dec. 9, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
The research is a culmination of students’ experiences as UW-L History majors ending in a capstone history research seminar. This event is open to the public and begins at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The Climate Crisis and American Health to be discussed at Dec. 9 talk
Climate change is affecting many aspects of our lives including our health, says Joel Charles. Charles, who has a Master of Public Health degree and is finishing medical training to become a physician. He is educating others about the climate change-related health effects people are creating through the ever-increasing use of fossil fuels. Charles will present “The Climate Crisis and American Health: Moving From Threat to Opportunity” at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in 1400 Centennial Hall. Chancellor’s Open Forum to be held Dec. 10
Chancellor Joe Gow will hold an open forum for the campus community from 3-4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, in 1400 Centennial Hall. In addition to updates on the latest UW System news from Madison, Chancellor Gow will answer questions and address other topics of interest. Chancellor Gow has granted one hour release time to attend this event. Work with supervisors to ensure office coverage.La Crosse County Landfill director to talk about sustainability projects Dec. 10
Director of the La Crosse County Landfill Hank Koch will present a non-technical overview of sustainability-related projects at the landfill site. His presentation, “The La Crosse Landfill: A Living Laboratory,” begins at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec 10, in 100 Cowley Hall. "Trash" is a resource to be used to its fullest extent, says Koch. For example, the landfill is now providing methane gas to power the Onalaska Gundersen Clinic, and a nature trail has been completed at the site. The landfill has been widely recognized for its creative, innovative accomplishments. Koch is particularly interested in developing research collaborations with UW-L students and faculty in a variety of science and non-science disciplines. Pink Floyd music wraps up Album Encounters for 2013; ‘Winter Wonders’ is December Public Program
The next Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show — and the last one for 2013 — will feature Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for December is ”Winter Wonders.” The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21. UW-L is one of many local organizations to participate in the monthly “Jeans Day,” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar, participants may wear jeans. Campus participants should wear LIVEMAROON gear. The next Jeans Day is Friday, Dec. 13. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. This is a small way to join together and give back to the local community. In November UW-L raised $95. Resident, commuter spring parking permit sales begin Dec. 16
A limited number of on-campus resident parking spaces are available for sale on a first-come, first-served basis. Sales begin Monday, Dec. 16, at Parking and Police Services, located at 605 17th St. N. Online and phone sales are not offered.
Commuter parking spaces are still available for faculty, staff and students who live off campus. J-Term and summer parking is included with purchase of an annual or spring permit. J-Term permits may be also be purchased separately.

Youth Sports Camp set for Dec. 27, 28; sign up now
The annual Youth Sports Camp for children ages five-12 will be held Friday and Saturday, Dec. 27 and 28, and runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with drop off from 8-9 a.m. and pick up from 4-5 p.m. Camp meets in Mitchell Hall. Physical Education Teacher Education staff members Lori Petersen and Deb Sazama, along with volunteer students from the physical education program, lead the camp. Children participate in age-appropriate activities in both competitive and non-competitive groups. Cost is $35 per day or $60 for both days. Ronald S. Go, a doctor in Mayo Clinic's Section of Hematology and Department of Health Sciences Research, is the keynote speaker at the Monday, Dec. 16, La Crosse BioResearch Forum. Dr. Go will speak on "Determining the Clinical Significance of Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance" from 12:15-1 p.m. in the Overholt Auditorium at Gundersen Lutheran. The free forums are open to the public and hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Those attending should park in the Green ramp (see map) or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.

OCW Holiday Social set for Dec. 12; campus community invited
UW-L’s Organization for Campus Women is hosting its Holiday Social from 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Children from the Campus Child Care Center will sing at 11:30 a.m. Refreshments and desserts will be provided by OCW.

OCW Bookclub next read is 'Life After Life'
