GIS poster competition showcases student research

Geography student Rachel Wozniak, from Milwaukee, researched breast cancer in Wisconsin for her poster in UW-L's first Geographic Information Science Poster Competition Dec. 6 in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. She used alcohol consumption, obesity, pollution and poverty level data to determine the areas in Wisconsin where there is a high probability of being diagnosed with breast cancer. "There were a lot of people who are being diagnosed with breast cancer and I wanted to know why," she said. "I found Milwaukee does have the highest probability of being diagnosed with breast cancer." The senior was one of 14 students in the competition hosted by the Geography and Earth Science Department. Events that day also included guest speakers from UW-Madison and Northern Illinois University who talked about Wikimapping and mapping from airborne laser scanners. Geography and Earth Science Assistant Professor Gargi Chaudhuri says the department would like to make the competition an annual event at a bigger scale. "It's a good opportunity to invite undergrads from other Wisconsin system schools, too, for participation," says Chaudhuri. "I hope this event will help to spread the message about GIS and cartographic applications and encourage more students in geography and from other departments to take these courses in future." Posters are being judged by those who attended the competition, along with geography, computer science and biology faculty. Results will be published this week on the Geography and Earth Science website. UW-L in the news

A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news. "UW-L to stage classic 'Christmas Carol,'" Hispanic Business, Dec. 1. Mary Leonard doesn't fret about the ghosts of productions past when directing "A Christmas Carol." Leonard, who is directing the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse theater arts department's fourth production of the Charles Dickens classic, acknowledges competition from other activities and the plethora of Scrooge plays, movies and animations this time of year -- and God bless every one ... "Bradley Butterfield: Don't let power trump free speech," Op-ed, La Crosse Tribune, Dec. 1. Earlier this semester, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse had one of those "teachable moments" people are always talking about. The "Rachel Slocum Free-Speech Incident" (RSFSI, for short) was born when Chancellor Joe Gow sided with those outside the university demanding the geography professor be somehow disciplined for writing what some perceived to be a politically biased email to her students ... Thanksgiving weekend shoppers spend more than $12 billion, WXOW.com  Dec. 2. "Stores honestly wouldn't care when you spend your money as long as you do," Mike Haupert, Professor of Economics, UW-La Crosse said. Haupert said the ... "Shhhhhhh ... UW-L library offers a space for silent study," La Crosse Tribune, Dec. 4. Brad Allhiser needs quiet if he's studying for an essay. But silent workspaces can be tough to find at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and students like the 19-year-old freshman often settle for whatever they find amid the bustle of a busy, social campus. Librarians to the rescue. There's no talking allowed in a new silent study room in Murphy Library's basement, converted earlier this semester in response to complaints from some students ... "Regents to vote on UW-L's new student center," WXOW, Dec. 4. A committee of the UW System Board of Regents will vote on whether to approve the design and construction of UW-La Crosse's new student center during a meeting Thursday in Madison. The full board is expected to give final approval Friday. No taxpayer dollars will be used to fund the estimated $53.3 million building, which will be entirely funded by student fees ... "UW-L study abroad program among top in nation," Racquet, Dec. 5. The 2013 Open Doors Report has nationally recognized UW-La Crosse’s study abroad program, ranking UW-L in the top 30 schools in the nation ...   OCW artwork.
