The 5th annual one-day free festival will feature The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band from the Twin Cities and internationally acclaimed trumpeter and Broadway actor/singer Byron Stripling. Performances include The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band from 5:30-6:45 p.m. and the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra with Byron Stripling from 7-9 p.m. The rain site is the Weber Center for the Performing Arts. Together since 1967, Bloomington's Barbary Coast has been performing Dixieland jazz worldwide for more than 40 years. A versatile and talented group, the ensemble specializes in a lively, toe-tapping genre. To add to on-stage action, the group of six plays 18 instruments — from banjo and bass to trombone, clarinet and more — and occasionally switches selections up mid-song. Stripling headlines the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra performance. As soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Stripling performed frequently under the baton of Keith Lockhart, and was featured soloist on the PBS-TV special, "Evening at Pops." Currently, he is artistic director and conductor of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra. [caption id="attachment_24777" align="alignright" width="275"]Photo of Barbary Coast band. He has been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and performs at jazz festivals throughout the world. Stripling was chosen to star in the lead role of the musical, "Satchmo." He had a cameo performance in the TV movie, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles," and had a virtuoso trumpet and riotous comedic performance in the 42nd Street production of "From Second Avenue to Broadway." The La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, directed by UW-L Music Professor Greg Balfany, is Western Wisconsin's only jazz repertory orchestra and was formed in 1972 to perform "Jazz On A Sunday Afternoon" for the Great River Festival of the Arts Summer Concert Series.
