Be sweet to your heart
The average American eats almost 100 pounds a year of added sweeteners. This equates to almost a quarter pound of empty calories from sugar and other sweeteners a day. It’s easy to quickly consume a lot of calories from added sugars. Extra calories from sugar can lead to weight gain, obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Added sugars in your foods can increase your triglyceride levels and blood pressure, which raises your risk for heart disease. People who consume a large amount of added sugars have reduced intake of calcium, vitamin A, iron, zinc and fiber. Remember, sugar is sugar. Added sugars include high-fructose corn syrup, white or brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, agave syrup, beet sugar, brown rice syrup and honey. Added sugars are most commonly consumed in baked goods, ice cream, candy, jellies, fruit drinks and soda. But, be aware of other sources of added sugars in breakfast cereal, granola bars, bagels, fruit canned in syrup, instant oatmeal, yogurt and coffee drinks. Currently, added sugars are not differentiated from naturally occurring sugars on the nutrition facts label, which sometimes makes it difficult to tell whether or not a product has added sugars. If a food contains no milk or fruit, the sugar contained in the food is all from added sugars. The FDA’s proposed changes to the nutrition facts label will include a statement on added sugars. You can be sure that Sodexo’s Mindful recipes contain little or no added sugars. On a daily basis limit your added sugars to sweetening healthful foods such as whole grain cereal and yogurt. Be sweet to your heart and make your favorite sweets a treat instead of a daily habit. — Sarah Nicklay, DietitianUW-L in the news

Your new challenge: stay hydrated
The latest Wellness at Work challenge is all about something that’s vital to our health – getting enough water. It’s the Water You Drinking? challenge, developed for workplaces like ours by Health Tradition Health Plan and Mayo Clinic Health System wellness experts. This challenge is available to all UW-L employees. Here’s your challenge: remember to drink eight glasses of water each day. We’ve all heard that recommendation, but how many of us follow through on it? Not many! This challenge is a chance to focus on staying well hydrated for one month. Our tracker sheets will help us remember. Then, when the healthy habit is established, it will be easier to do automatically. Eight glasses are recommended for most people. Follow the link to print your tracker sheet. The Water You Drinking? challenge begins Sunday, April 13, and ends Saturday, May 10. Send your completed tracker sheet to the Student Life Office, 149 Graff Main Hall. At the end of the challenge, we’ll collect the tracker sheets and hold a random drawing. Health Tradition Health Plan will award six 23 oz. Tritan water bottles with neoprene sleeve, secure flip top lid and carry strap. We’ll also draw for additional prizes. Refer questions and suggestions to make the challenge more fun to Deanna Kabliska at 608.785.8601, Jason Bertrand at 608.785.8977, or Jenna Willems at 608.785.8062. Thank you for participating in this challenge. Remember that the deadline for receiving the discounted rates for CSA shares is April 1. Have you submitted your request to the CSA of your choice? See the attached links for more information. Congratulations to Chandra Hawkins and Jesica Helgren who were selected from the CSA Meet and Greet on March 10 as the winners of a CSA Cookbook provided by the Get Active, La Crosse organization.
