The Small Business Development Center is offering half-day “QuickBooks” workshops Tuesday, May 8, Tuesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 29. And the SBDC is once again offering “Marketing Basics for Business” on May 8.
QuickBooks workshop is available on three dates
QuickBooks is an outstanding management tool for small business owners but can be confusing without proper introduction or training. The UW-La Crosse Small Business Development Center is offering half-day “QuickBooks” workshops from 8:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday, May 8, Tuesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 29.
On May 8, QuickBooks Essentials provides instruction for entering transactions, producing invoices and checks, setting up vendors, customers, jobs and items, reconciling bank and credit card statements, and producing financial statements. The workshop is best suited for people who want to start using QuickBooks or have recently started using QuickBooks.
On May 13, QuickBooks Payroll will help business owners get the most out of the software and help them customize it. Those attending will discover how to use QuickBooks for processing a payroll. Topics include:
Basic payroll concepts
Setting up wage and PTO items
Setting up employees
Setting up payroll taxes and garnishments
Setting up pre-tax deductions
Processing payroll and liability payments
Direct deposit options
Quarterly and annual reporting
On May 29, QuickBooks Advanced will help business owners get the most out of the software and customize it for their business. In the half-day session, discover how to customize QuickBooks forms and reports to fit your unique business. Also, find out how to enter estimates and produce progress invoices and track time and materials. Topics will include: customizing financial statements, reports and invoices, estimates and progress invoicing, tracking time and materials, and memorizing transactions.
Anke Swartz of JRM & Associates, LLC. is the instructor. Swartz has 20 years of experience in both private industry and public accounting. She provides bookkeeping and accounting software training and support for clients in a variety of industries.

UW-L offers marketing basics workshop
Understanding the basics of marketing is a crucial step in getting a business or non-profit organization off the ground and running strong. The UW-L Small Business Development Center is once again offering “Marketing Basics for Business” from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 8, on campus.
The workshop provides an introduction to determining target markets, analyzing competition, building promotional calendars, and evaluating marketing activities. The instructor is UW-L Marketing Department Faculty Member Joe Chilsen.
Registration is $45 and includes materials and parking. Pre-registration is required; seating is limited. The deadline to register is Thursday, May 1.
Marketing Basics is part of the Small Business Development Center’s “Business Basics” series. The series also consists of “First Steps to Starting Your Business,” “Financial Basics,” “Website Basics” and “Planning Basics.” Participants are welcome to attend the individual classes or can register for the series at discounted rates.
