Alumni award goes to a social justice advocate, community leader

This year the Rada Distinguished Alumni Award went to a strong advocate for diversity and social justice, both on campus and in the community. The award, which recognizes UW-L alumni making exceptional contributions to their professions and communities, was presented to Thomas Harris, assistant director of Multicultural Student Services.

Skechers pays for toning shoe claims, thanks, in part, to UW-L research

Skechers toning shoes may not be the secret to a slimmer body and a better butt. The company is now paying for advertisements that suggest this, thanks, in part, to a UW-La Crosse study.

GAB provides information on proper location for college students to vote June 5

The Government Accountability Board has received a number of inquiries from students, municipal clerks and university and college representatives regarding the proper location for college students to cast votes at the June 5 recall election      

UW-L surplus sale begins May 23

UW-L will again conduct a sale of surplus property in partnership with the online auction site www.wisconsinsurplus.com May 23 through June 6. Pre-registration and a bidder number is required prior to any bid submittals. Terms and conditions of sale, along with contact information can be found on the auction’s website.

Retirement reception for Anita Evans is May 30

A retirement reception for Anita Evans, Murphy Library, will be from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, in the Gathering Place, Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. A program will begin at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Golf Outing for Multicultural Scholarships set for June 5

The 13th Annual Golf Outing for Multicultural Scholarships will tee off at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Pine Creek Golf Course in La Crescent. Teams of four compete in a scramble that is culminated with a burger bar and giveaways. Fee is $40 per player and includes nine holes of golf, cart and burger. Willhite, Educational Studies, had a review published of the book “Through the schoolhouse door: folklore, community, curriculum” in the June 2012 issue of CHOICE. Gerry Cox, professor emeritus, Sociology/Archaeology, presented "Children and Death," at Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center, Kane'ohe, Hawaii, May, 2012. Cox was nominated for the Distinguished Book Award at the Midwest Sociological Society for the book, “Death and the American Indian,” 2010, Omaha, Nebraska: Grief Illustrated Press. He also organized and chaired a session, "End-of-Life Care: Dying, Grief, Hospice, and Palliative Care” and presented a paper, "Hospice and the American Indian.” He also served on a panel, "Emeriti Faculty-Reflections, Rewards, Regrets, Recommendations: Varied Voices” and participated in a session, "Meet the Authors." Two alumni students from psychology, both awarded an undergraduate research grant to support their project in 2011, published their research in the “Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs” in the article, “Piecing together the puzzle: development of the Societal Attitudes towards Autism (SATA) scale.” Luci Flood is pursuing a graduate degree in school psychology; Amanda Bulgrin is pursuing a graduate degree in counseling. Betsy Morgan, Psychology, was the faculty mentor for the project.
