Students get a jump-start on employment at Spring Career Expo

"This is the largest number of employers we have had on campus for a career expo in six years," he says. "This is another likely sign of the steadily improving economy." Combining the Feb. 27 Spring Career Expo, pictured, with the Feb. 19 Summer Job & Camp Fair, UW-L hosted more than 130 employers on campus in seven days. Several employers conduct follow-up interviews on campus. Many post jobs and internships in Eagle Opportunities, UW-L's online career management system for UW-L students and alumni. Students can learn how to create essays that use more dynamic, rhetorically-situated organizational schemes in the “Writing Beyond the Five-paragraph Essay” workshop. The free Writing Center workshop runs from 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, in the Murphy Library Learning Center. Students will learn how to find forms for various kinds of content, as well as how and why to move beyond the limited structures of writing they may have learned in high school. Topics include thesis placement, paragraph development and using counterarguments. The workshop will be conducted by three Writing Center tutors. Nirobey ("Silently"), a documentary film unearthing violations of rights of the workers in some non-government organizations, will be shown at 4 p.m. Monday, March 10, in 1309 Centennial Hall. Due to the socialization of women in many parts of the developing world, NGOs recruit women as employees for their perceived submissiveness, notes Mahruq Khan, Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Many of these women, devoted to noble professional causes, personally endure further exploitation within these NGOs and never achieve their own potential. This Bangladeshi documentary, directed by Jannatul Ferdous Ivy, examines one woman’s quest to challenge her superiors’ authority, debunk stereotypes about people with disabilities, and demand greater protections and dignity for all human rights activists. Help international students adjust to UW-L and life in U.S.; apply to be International Peer Advisor by March 24
UW-L students who want to help international students adjust to life at UW-L can apply to be International Peer Advisors for the fall 2014 New International Student Orientation Week. IPAs assist new international students acclimate and adjust to campus life at UW-L, the La Crosse community and U.S. culture. IPAs greet new students at the airport, lead small international student groups through orientation week and answer questions and address concerns. IPAs work closely with other members of the orientation team. IPAs attend mandatory trainings, international student orientation sessions and some night life activities throughout New International Student Orientation Week.Apply now to audition for International Banquet performances

There are approximately 250 students on campus who have served or are serving in the military, according to Nicole Jablonski, Veteran Services. The number of student veterans and dependents on college campuses has increased because of the number of troops returning from deployment, high unemployment rates among young veterans and enhanced GI Bill educational benefits. There have been more than 2 million U.S. service members deployed to a combat zone in the past 10 years. One-third have served multiple tours in combat zones. To help the campus community best support student veterans staff in UW-L's Veterans Services have developed "Supporting Student Veterans: A Guide for Staff and Faculty." Those who want to use printed tax forms and publications can find them at local libraries. Murphy Library has common tax forms and publications for both Wisconsin and Minnesota available for pick up on a table just inside the main entrance of the library. Murphy Library does not have federal tax forms and publications in print, but those, along with many for Wisconsin and Minnesota, can be found at the La Crosse Public Library. According to the Diabetes Prevention Program, diabetes could be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes for people with prediabetes. Prediabetes is diagnosed when blood glucose is higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. The National DPP will enroll adults who have been diagnosed with prediabetes based on a blood test or are at high risk for pre diabetes. High risk factors include:- Body mass index over 24 (or 22 for people of Asian descent)
- Family history of diabetes
- Older age
- Little physical activity
