Students approve new fieldhouse
UW-L students voted to increase student fees to help pay for a new fieldhouse during an online referendum Tuesday and Wednesday. A groundbreaking ceremony for UW-L’s new student center was held Friday, Oct. 17, at the construction site. The 204,787 gross-square-foot building will begin to go up soon after on the parking lot east of Wimberly Hall, across the street from the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. A short reception in Cartwright Center followed the ground breaking ceremony.
The new center is expected to open in early 2017. It will replace the current student center, Cartwright Center, built in 1958 with additions in 1964 and 1985. When Cartwright was built UW-L had 1,772 students compared to 10,558 today. Read more.
Students learn about Language Resource Center at Oct. 16 open house

The Language Resource Center's Oct. 16 open house was held so language students could become familiar with the center and its resources, including conversation partners in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish; and technology resources. The event included international tables about studying abroad from language students and international students who shared their experience. All those who presented work at the LRC as conversation partners. 'Light up the Night' bike ride set for Oct. 23
The annual "Light up the Night Ride" begins at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, from the Recreational Eagle Center's south entrance. Participants ride to the Root Note, 115 4th St. S., where free bike lights, provided by Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition, will be distributed and installed for anyone who needs a set. The Root Note will provide a special discount for participants.
The event is sponsored by DRBC, Wisconsin Bike Fed, UW-L Outdoor Connection, UW-L Office of Student Life Wellness Resource Center, and UW-L "ON THE GO".
Oxfam Hunger Banquet is Oct. 23
Explore why people are hungry. The Oxfam Hunger Banquet event includes an interactive simulation to learn about hunger locally and globally, and what can be done. The banquet will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
'Jeans Day' Friday, Oct. 24
UW-L is one of many local organizations that participate in “Jeans Day” each month and is sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. In return for $1 (suggested donation), UW-L faculty and staff have the opportunity to wear jeans rather than usual business attire. Donations go to designated local, non-profit charities or organizations each month. The charities this month are Holmen Area Foundation and La Crosse Area Suicide Prevention Initiative.
Locate your building contact person on the list below, contribute your suggested $1, and collect your Jeans Day sticker. It is not necessary to wear jeans to participate. This is a great way to unite our campus in supporting local non-profit organizations in the Greater La Crosse area.
In September the campus raised $140. Let’s show the community how generous we can be.

Roundtable discussion on teaching college writing online to be held Oct. 24
Faculty from UW-L's English Department will explore the myths, lore and reality of teaching college writing online in a roundtable discussion from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in 113 Wimberly Hall. Faculty members Natalie Eschenbaum, Marie Moeller, Kate Parker and Lindsay Steiner will share their experiences in the 2014-15 William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series event "Teaching College Writing in Online and Blended Environments: Myths, Lore, and Reality." They will share best practices and tips about online training and grants; creating blended, hybrid and fully online first-year writing classes; theories that guide teaching writing in online spaces; and suggestions for implementing them. The next Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for October is "Aurora — The Story of the Norhtern Lights." The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Intramural departments from Western Technical College, Viterbo College and UW-L have teamed up to present the second annual city championship volleyball tournament.
Register to participate in the 6's volleyball tournament at the information desk in the Recreational Eagle Center. Winners of the tournament will win a specialized city championship champ shirt. Tournament date is Saturday, Oct. 25.
UW-L's Physics Department is holding a silent auction and dinner fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 8, to raise money for Jolene Harris who is receiving treatment for multiple myeloma. Jolene is the wife of Steve Harris, Physics. A silent auction runs from 5-9 p.m. A dinner of Indian cuisine prepared by New Taste of India runs from 6-8 p.m. The fundraiser will b held at the Overtime Sports Bar, 1920 Ward Ave.

Reuter Hall will receive trick-or-treaters from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. Trick-or-treaters can stop by Angell, Hutchison and Wentz halls from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
Tickets on sale now for Nov. 8 Harris benefit
Pay for parking remotely by phone
Those paying for parking in a pay station can now add time to the meter remotely by phone. UWL's Parking Services now offers Pay-by-phone. Visitors can download the PassportParking app to smartphones or go to m.ppprk.com to create an account. They can then add time remotely by selecting one of two zones on campus. Zone 350 is for external campus lots with pay stations, and Zone 351 is for the parking ramp. Visitors use their vehicle license plates to validate transactions.

SAH 105 to change name starting spring semester
SAH 105 has a new name. As of the 2015 spring semester SAH 105; Analysis of Health, Wellness & Disease for the Health Care Consumer; will be called HP 105. Only the prefix for the course has changed. There will be no changes in the course content. HP 105, taught by Health Professions faculty, is one of three courses that fulfill the Health and Physical Well-Being general education requirement. Jo Arney, Political Science/Public Administration; Jim Jorstad, Information Technology; and Cecilia Manrique, Political Science/Public Administration; co-authored the chapter “The Wisconsin Spring” in the book "Handbook of Research on Political Activism in the Information Age." The book was edited by Ashu Solo (Hershey, PA: IGI Global, August 2014). Manrique also served as a member of the editorial advisory board for the publication.
Jim Jorstad, Information Technology, has been named one of the Center for Digital Education’s Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers. Food Day is Friday, Oct. 24, in Whitney Center
An exciting day full of educational opportunities and delicious local food is upon us. Come to Whitney Center during lunch and dinner time Friday, Oct. 24, to enjoy a local meal, poster display, samples and a photo booth. The Student Nutrition Association, Peer Health Educators and Registered Dietitian Katie Callahan will be available to answer questions about Food Day or local food. Food Day is an annual nationwide celebration and movement for healthy, affordable and sustainably produced food and a grassroots campaign for better food polices. Food Day encourages people to “Eat Real” and incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables over highly-processed food items in the diet. In a world where chronic diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes are skyrocketing, Food Day is a reminder about the power of real food. Frequently-asked questions doc on same-sex marriage legislation in Wisconsin is now online
The Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) has prepared a frequently-asked questions document describing the impacts of recent legislation changes on benefits for State employees with same-sex spouses. ETF will provide same-sex couples married in Wisconsin or in other states/countries a 30-day enrollment opportunity beginning Oct. 15 (for marriages that took place before Oct. 6). The 2014 Open Access Week commemoration offers many opportunities to learn about open access issues and how they apply to research done at UW-L.
SPARC has produced this short video: Open Access Explained (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5rVH1KGBCY) that quickly highlights the importance of increasing access to research.
Open access is gaining support in the scientific community. In a 2004 letter to Congress, 25 Nobel Prize winners write: "There’s no question, open access truly expands shared knowledge across scientific fields — it is the best path for accelerating multi-disciplinary breakthroughs in research."
