Explore archaeology in July with the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center

The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center offers a variety of programs throughout the month of July for both youth and adults at UW-La Crosse. Enrollment is still open for the following programs. Learn more and register on UWL’s Continuing Education website.“Temples & Tombs of the Americas” will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, July 16, at 312 Wimberly Hall. Students entering grades 4-6 will explore the buildings, writings and rituals of the Maya, Inca and Aztecs of Mesoamerica and South America. They’ll participate in hands-on activities, such as mask making and writing hieroglyphics. Registration is $80. • “Introduction to Archaeology” will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, in 312 Wimberly Hall. Students entering grades 5-9 will explore MVAC’s Archaeology Lab and work with artifacts recovered from area excavations as an introduction to the science of archaeology. Registration is $80. • During a “Public Archaeology Field School,” high school students and adults will spend several days in the field and lab working alongside professional archaeologists on an actual archaeological excavation and survey work. Three-day experience dates are Monday, July 16 -Wednesday, July 18. The five-day experience runs Monday, July 16-Friday, July 20. Registration is $350 and $500, respectively. Both events initially meet in 3110 Student Union. • The public is welcome to see what MVAC Public Field School participants are uncovering during an open house from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Goose Island County Park, on the Mississippi River south of La Crosse.
