Students from the La Crosse area tested their knowledge of nearly two-dozen books in an annual competition.

The joy of reading was put to the test for local elementary schoolers. More than 80 4th and 5th graders from the La Crosse School District spent their Monday morning quizzing their knowledge of books they’ve read outside of school in the annual Battle of the Books. The event, hosted on campus by the UWL English Department, asks the teams of students questions related to 20 books that were picked back in September. “So often we watch students get medals and awards for their athletic abilities,” says Jennifer Mohlenhoff-Baggett, English lecturer. “It’s so great to see their academic skills get that same recognition.” The winning team from each of the 11 elementary schools will take an online test as part of the statewide competition.
