After Drake Hall was evacuated for a fire in the basement early Sunday, Jan. 29, there has been no shortage of goodwill in the UW-L campus community.
Shortly after the hall was evacuated, surrounding halls welcomed displaced Drake residents. Angell Hall residents baked puppy chow and cookies for Drake Hall students as they waited to move items out of their residence hall rooms on Monday. Later in the week, students throughout campus offered their rooms for Drake students to move in for the remainder of the semester, including about 25 students from Angell Hall, notes Kate Demerse, residence hall director at Angell.
“Residence life is a campus community and we stand together,” she says.
Students learned on Thursday that they would not be able to move back into the hall this semester because of the extent of the fire damage and necessary repairs. By Thursday evening, the Office of Residence Life had given all Drake students initial new room assignments.
“Our ultimate goal is to get you in a situation where you can get back into your routine, which is important for your academics,” explained Nick Nicklaus, UW-L director of residence life, during a meeting with Drake Hall students Thursday night.

The UW-L campus community helped Drake students move out over the weekend. Volunteers can help with the second move-out Feb. 10-12. The move-outs will be from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Simply come by the building during move-out hours to help.
Drake Hall staff and leadership teams continue to look for ways to keep Drake Hall and its cube communities connected via programs, activities, and common gathering spaces throughout the semester. If you have suggestions on ways to support Drake Hall, contact the Office of Residence Life at 608.785.8075.
Some people have already come forward with ideas. Spaces such as the UW-L Cartwright Center basement where Career Services was previously located and the Newman Center have welcomed Drake students who want a space to study.
“We are open all the time for people who want to study. We are reinforcing that right now — especially if the living conditions they have now are not conducive for studying,” says Jon Stuttgen, campus minister at Newman Center. “If you need a place to come — you are welcome to come here.”
Drake was evacuated early Sunday morning because of a fire in a basement common area. No one was injured in the incident and all the residents of the building are safe in other residence halls and apartments. Read the latest updates.
Roncalli Newman Parish is at 1725 State St., across the street from Graff Main Hall. It is typically open from 7 a.m to 9 p.m.
