UWL theatre production selected for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival

The UW-La Crosse Department of Theatre and Dance production of "What the Constitution Means to Me" has been selected to perform at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) Region 3 competition in Madison, Wisconsin, in January 7-11.

"What the Constitution Means" to Me by Heidi Schreck was selected as one of only eight productions from more than 50 college entries across the five-state region, which includes Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Western Ohio. Performing at the regional competition is the final stage of national judging, and it's a significant achievement, says Laurie Kincman, chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance. National representatives attend regional festivals across the country to observe the performances, after which a national committee reviews the entries to award national accolades. Individual student winners in all areas are invited to the national festival in Washington D. C. in April to perform or present their work in design, stage management, dramaturgy, or playwriting and be considered for national awards.

"What the Constitution Means to Me" is a hilarious, hopeful, and achingly-human new play. A pay-what-you-can open rehearsal will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6 in Toland Theatre, Lowe Center for the Arts. All donation proceeds will help defray the cost of traveling to the festival. Donations will be accepted at the door.

About the play

Direct from Broadway, Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play breathes new life into the Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. Fifteen-year-old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the U.S. In this hopeful new play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
