Alums, reps gather in Madison
More than 100 alumni and state politicians with UW-L ties gathered in Madison Feb. 8 for the 22nd annual UW-L Political Science Alumni Reception. "[The gathering] is all about the things UW-L stands for," says Al Trapp, president of the UW-L Foundation, a co-sponsor of the event. Trapp, who has attended all 22 receptions, says the event is the university's most popular annual event for alumni and friends in the Madison area, many who work in state government. State Sen. Jennifer Shilling, '92, welcomed participants on behalf of those in the legislature with UW-L ties. "The special La Crosse experience that we had we continue to hold very dear," she says. "We want to celebrate UW-L."

February's cooking class features soup and quick bread

Award-winning poet William Stobb will read poems from 4:30-5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, in 114 Wimberly Hall. Stobb is the author of five poetry collections, including the National Poetry Series selection "Nervous Systems (2007)" and "Absentia (2011)," both from Penguin Books. His unpublished novel "Aces" is a current finalist for the New American Fiction Prize and the script he co-authored for New Rock Theater's "Predator: The Musical" is opening for its second run at Chicago's Stage 773. UW-L's English Department is hosting the free event. Panel to discuss pros, cons of city administrator A panel discussion at UW-La Crosse will look at the pros and cons of having a city administrator for the City of La Crosse. A panel of experts will discuss the issue from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 14, in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The forum is free and open to all. The panel will include UW-Oshkosh Assistant Professor Karl Nollenberger, Ed Madere of the Wisconsin City Managers Association, and Beaver Dam Mayor Tom Kennedy. The three will discuss city administrators in light of a binding referendum that will appear on the ballot of City of La Crosse voters during the April 3 election. Co-sponsors of the event include the League of Women Voters, UW-L Joint Committee on Legislative Relations, and the UW-L Political Science Department. Lonely Hearts Club coming to UW-La Crosse
The first ever Lonely Hearts Club with Jenn Grinels is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Admission is free. Grinels is a musician who plays acoustic guitar with elements of folk, pop rock, jazz and blues. She pledges that her powerful vocals will make listeners forget about that girl or boy who forgot to ask them out for Valentine’s Day. Legendary Polar Explorer to talk about Arctic preservation at UW-L
Legendary Polar Explorer Will Steger, who led the first confirmed dogsled journey to the North Pole — without resupply — in 1986, will present on Arctic preservation at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. A question and answer session follows. A reception and book signing is from 6-7 p.m. in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center.
Steger has traveled tens of thousands of miles by kayak and dogsled for more than 45 years, leading teams on some of the most significant polar expeditions in history. He led the longest unsupported dogsled expedition in history across Greenland in 1988 and the first dogsled traverse of Antarctica in 1989. For his accomplishments, he earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from National Geographic Adventure magazine in 2007.
He continues his commitment to education and exploration through the Will Steger Foundation. He aims to empower people around the world to take action on global warming solutions.

Cowley Hall is now regularly open between noon and 6 p.m. Sundays to accommodate the increasing demand for weekend review sessions and other academic needs. Thank you, Turkey trotters
Thank you to the 2,268 participants in UW-L's 17th Annual Turkey Trot Nov. 19, 2011, and the more than 80 student volunteers who made the race a success. The Joggin for Josh team won the Subway Team Challenge by having the largest team register for the race. Reuter Hall won the For All The Stuffing Residence Hall Challenge by having the most residents participate. With funds raised, UW-L Rec Sports donated $5,000 to the UW-L Multicultural Scholarship Fund, $4,000 to the New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Center and $1,500 to UW-L's Student Affairs Division. Campus community members may apply for funds for instruction, research and public service projects for the 2011-12 fiscal year through the UW-L Foundation Small Grants program. Small grants are available for a wide variety of projects. Click here for grant information and application forms and a list of awards for the 2011-12 year. Requests for up to half of the cost of minor equipment will be considered. Requests from students and/or campus organizations must be endorsed by a UW-L faculty or staff member. Grant activities and expenses must occur between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. Requests for food and beverages are discouraged. Requests for international travel and stipends for classified staff, academic staff and faculty members will not be considered. Applications seeking multi-year support cannot be funded. Project directors (applicants) must submit one paper copy (with required signatures) to the UW-L Foundation Office, Cleary Alumni & Friends Center, plus one electronic copy of the application (Word format, without signatures) as an email attachment to Sara Olson no later than 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 28. The Small Grants Program is made possible through donations to the Foundation’s unrestricted fund mainly by alumni, local businesses, matching gifts from companies and other friends of the university. A committee of Foundation representatives and university faculty and academic staff review the applications and make funding recommendations to the Foundation. The Heating Plant will be shut down for scheduled maintenance and repairs from 6 p.m. Saturday, May 12, through 10 p.m. Sunday, May 20. During the shutdown there will be no steam distribution services available to campus buildings. Cage washers, autoclaves and other steam-supplied equipment will be affected. Plan accordingly in anticipation of the shutdown. For more information contact the Heating Plant Superintendent Timothy Merrell at 785.8710.

John Willson, Health Professions, Physical Therapy, received the prestigious Rose Award for Excellence in Research at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association meeting in Chicago Feb. 8-11 for the manuscript "Gluteal Muscle Activation During Running in Females with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome." The manuscript by Willson and Tom Kernozek, Health Professions, Physical Therapy; along with Becky Arndt, Dan Reznichek and Scott Straker; was published in Clinical Biomechanics Aug: 26(7):735-40. The award acknowledges published research in leading orthopedic and physical therapy journals during the past year.
Learn about new UW System personnel systems online and through brown bag sessions
As a part of the 2011-13 biennial budget, the University of Wisconsin System is developing two distinct new personnel systems — one for UW-Madison employees and one for all other UW System employees — to be implemented July 1, 2013. OCW members to share baked goods at 'Bake for Drake' event and collect 'A Day of Giving' food donations Feb. 14
UW-L's Organization for Campus Women (OCW) kicked off its "A Day of Giving" food at the Chancellor's Address in January. The campus community has been placing non-perishable food items in boxes and bags around campus marked with "A Day of Giving." All items will go to UW-L’s Helping Our Own food pantry. OCW members will pick up donations Feb. 14. OCW is providing baked goodies to Drake Hall students and staff and those helping Drake Hall students and staff that day as well. Stop at a "Bake for Drake" event from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition, to pick up home-baked goodies and needed food and items from the "Day of Giving" collection.
