Two UW-L alumni founded Happy Rain Theatre Co. in 2011. The group will perform its fourth annual show, the musical production of “Edges” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5 -6, in the Frederick Theatre in Morris Hall.
Happy Rain Theatre is independent from the university and student-run. It provides students an additional opportunity to develop their craft, says Kevin Fanshaw, ’12, a co-founder of the group. Students learn not only about acting, but also designing, producing, directing, managing a budget and more.
“We feel the exclusively student team encourages individuals to take chances and challenge themselves with academic pressures,” says Fanshaw.
“Edges” poses the question “Who am I and who do I want to become?” It’s a question some cast members say they’ve recently asked themselves as they near college graduation.
“I think everyone can relate to some part of this show — a relationship or an anecdote,” says UW-L Senior Lewis Youngren, a theater major and the show’s director.
UW-L Senior Quinn Masterson, an actor and the shows producer, graduates in May. Like the character he portrays, he wonders what’s next.
“For most of us, it’s pretty real. We are all in different stages of our life and figuring out where we want to be,” says Masterson. “I’m excited for people to see it.”
