Banned Books Week is Sept. 24 - 30. Join fellow students, colleagues, and community members for several events including a public reading of banned books, a powerful play, and a cabaret!
This year's Banned Books Week promises to be special in La Crosse! Join us as we:

These are all events planned by Murphy Library and the La Crosse Public Library during Banned Books Week, September 24- 30. Banned Books Week is a national celebration that promotes the freedom of choice and the freedom of expression, even if that choice or opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular.Events include:Fifth Annual Freedom to Read - Read Out: this takes place from 12 noon to 2 p.monWednesday, September 27, at UWL's Hoeschler Clock Tower in the center of campus. The public is invited to drop by during the event and listen to the readings. Participants and audience members who wish to do so can enter into a drawing for banned book mugs.
Volunteers are needed to read short passages (no more than five minutes) at the event. Those interested in reading for the program should complete the Volunteer to Read Form or contact Marc Manke, Murphy Library, at mmanke@uwlax.edu
Alabama Story: The script reading and subsequent discussion will take place at 7:30 p.m. onMonday, September 25, at The Pump House in La Crosse. This is a powerful new play about librarians, censorship, race, and the power of books. Written by Kenneth Jones and premiered in January 2015 at the Pioneer Theatre Company in Salt Lake City, "Alabama Story" was a finalist in the 2014 National Playwrights Conference of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center. Banned Books Cabaret: Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27, at The Pump House for fun, daring, truth-poking cabaret entertainment related to banned books!All events are open to the public and are free of charge.
