Volunteers needed for national track meet in May 23-25 at UW-L

Nearly 40 years ago UW-L Alumnus Scott Sponholz could run the 440 yard dash in 49.5 seconds. These days the quarter mile race is measured in meters. Revised ‘No Tobacco Policy’ under development to meet faculty, staff concerns

A No Tobacco Policy is being revised after UW-L governance groups expressed concerns about the policy, including issues such as enforcement, the timeline and how it would affect UW-L neighbors.
Jason Bertrand, UW-L Wellness Coordinator and a promoter of the policy, is currently crafting the revised policy to address the concerns. Chancellor Joe Gow plans to consult with members of his cabinet and others on the revisions before approving it. Read more »

UW-L aims to offer another MOOC; online course improves college readiness

In January, more than 1,900 virtual classmates began solving linear equations and adding exponents in UW-La Crosse’s first massive open online course (MOOC). It was a new venture for UW-La Crosse and the University of Wisconsin System. The direct instruction in the seven-week MOOC ended in March, yet, students can continue to complete it at their own pace online for up to five years. English class releases ‘Steam Ticket’ literary publication

UW-La Crosse students enrolled in English 320 sifted through thousands of poems. They read hundreds of fiction and non-fiction pieces, and evaluated artwork. They laughed, argued and critiqued. Ultimately, they decided on the written work they collectively liked the best, which is now published in their own literary journal, “Steam Ticket.” Read more »

1,602 students to graduate at UW-L's spring commencement  

A total of 1,602 students, including 1,354 undergraduate students and 248 graduate students, will graduate at UW-L’s spring commencement ceremony Sunday, May 19, at the La Crosse Center, 300 Harborview Plaza. Two separate ceremonies are planned including:
  • a 10 a.m. ceremony — College of Business Administration; College of Liberal Studies; School of Education (including teacher education programs in Early Childhood-Middle Childhood, Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence, English, Social Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, German Studies, Spanish); School of Arts and Communication (including teacher education programs in Art, and Music [Choral, General, and Instrumental])
  • a 2 p.m. ceremony  — College of Science and Health; School of Education (including teacher education programs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Mathematics, Physical Education, and School Health Education)

International ecologist to talk about La Crosse's economy and natural resources

International ecologist Steve Apfelbaum will speak on how to work with the natural resources of La Crosse to improve the local economy at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, in Viterbo University's Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Center, 923 Jackson St. Rick Kyte will host the event. Apfelbaum is a bestselling author and creator of conservation developments. The presentation is cosponsored by the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce, Viterbo University, La Crosse Area Development Corporation, UW-Extension La Crosse County, 7 Rivers Region, La Crosse Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mississippi Valley Conservancy, and others. 

Cancer prevention is topic of May 16 bioresearch forum

Doctor Zigang Dong, professor and executive director at The Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota, Austin, is the keynote speaker for the May La Crosse BioResearch Forum. He speaks on “Can We Win the War Against Cancer by Prevention?"from 12:15-1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in the Overholt Auditorium at Gundersen Lutheran. The free forums are open to the public and hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Those attending should park in the Green ramp (see map) or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.

La Crosse Shred Day set for May 18

Bring up to two grocery bags of paper items per household to be shredded by Confidential Records Inc. from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 28, at Altra Federal Credit Union, 2715 Losey Blvd. The on-site shredding is free, safe and confidential. There is no need to remove staples, rubber bands or paper clips; however, food items, three-ring binders, plastic and foam packing materials are not allowed. Enjoy free refreshments and enter to win a personal shredder and more. Confidential Records Inc. is the records management company that Altra uses to destroy trash that might contain confidential information. Walsko retirement reception is May 20

A retirement reception will be held for Greg Walsko, chair of Educational Studies from 3-4 p.m. Monday, May 20, in the  Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Walsko has worked 25 years at UW-L.

Heating plant shutdown rescheduled from June 8 to June 1

Mark your calendars for the heating plant shutdown dates for scheduled maintenance and repairs. The heating plant shutdown has been rescheduled from June 8 to June 1. It will be off line starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 1, until 10 p.m. Sunday, June 9. During the shutdown there will be no steam distribution services available to any campus buildings. Subsequently, cage washers, autoclaves and other steam supplied equipment will be affected.  Plan accordingly in anticipation of this maintenance event. Grant development proposals due June 5

Faculty and staff who seek funds from the UW-L Faculty/Staff Grant Development Program to develop projects should provide proposals to the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs by 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 5. The program provides a stipend to support extramural grant proposal development, writing and submission. It also allows recipients to the opportunity to work in a project of their choice. Proposals may be submitted for grant writing projects that will take place between July 1, 2013, and May 15, 2014. Speakers wanted for Nov. 12 TED talk; deadline to submit nominations is June 21

"Turning Points" is the theme for a TEDx talk from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in 1309 Centennial Hall. Speakers are needed. Presentations may not exceed 15 minutes and should tell a story or argue for an idea related to "Turning Points." The TEDx program gives communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to talk about experiences. Keith Beyer, Chemistry; alumnus Drew Henningfield; and senior chemistry major Christian Pearson; published an article on their research "Solid/Liquid Phase Diagram of the Ammonium Sulfate/Glutaric Acid/Water System" in the Journal of Physical Chemistry A May 2. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation Atmospheric Chemistry Program (ATM-0803203). Professor Emeritus Gerry Cox, Sociology/Archaeology, presented, "Music and the Arts: the Elixir of Aging." at the International Workgroup on Death, Dying, and Bereavement in Victoria, British Columbia, from April 28- May 3. He presented  Music: Successful Aging." at the Midwest Sociological Society Meeting in Chicago. He also had the chapter "Religion, Spirituality and Traumatic Death" in The Handbook of Thanatology: the essential body of knowledge for the study of death, dying and bereavement. David Balk, editor, 2013. Tim Dale, Political Science, co-edited the book "Homer Simpson Ponders Politics: Popular Culture as Political Theory," published by the University Press of Kentucky. He also contributed a chapter to the book "Aristotle's Politics and the Virtues of Springfield: Community, Education, and Friendship in the Simpsons." Tony Docan-Morgan, Communication Studies, received the 2013 Most Outstanding Professor Award from UW-L's Residence Hall Association Council. History: Eleven UW-L student entries received honorable mentions at the state National History Day competition for their historical research. Julia Johnson, Liberal Studies and Communication Studies, published the essay “Cisgender Privilege, Intersectionality, and the Criminalization of CeCe McDonald:  Why Intercultural Communication Needs Transgender Studies” in the May 2013 (Vol. 6, No. 2) issue of the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication (pp. 135-144). Seth King, Physics/Astronomy, received a research grant of $44,434 for his project "Spray Pyrolysis Fabrication of Zinc Tungstate Thin Films for Photovoltaic Applications." Math: Under the mentorship of  UW-L math faculty and staff Jenn KosiakJenni McCool and Maggie McHugh, UW-L teacher candidates, math and education, presented at the Wisconsin Mathematics Council's Annual Conference in Green Lake May 3 and 4. Presentation topics included:
  • integrating ipads in the elementary mathematics classroom
  • connecting children's literature and mathematics
  • engaging elementary students in mathematics through games
  • investigating flipped classrooms, online learning materials, and the UWL Math MOOC

Karyn Quinn, Music, directed the South Dakota All State Jazz Combo May 2-4 at Northern University in Abeerdeen, S.D. Track & Field: UW-L's women's and men's outdoor track and field teams won Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAC) championships. This is the 28th time that UW-L women have won the WIAC outdoor title. It's the 49th time the UW-L men have captured the WIAC championship. The women's team's head coached is Pat Healy. The men's team's head coach is Josh Buchholtz.  Firm Footing artwork. "Firm Footing Factoid" is a new column about Firm Footing, a new UW-L Higher Learn Commission (HLC) initiative to promote and enhance student academic success.
Facts about UW-L transfer students:
  • The most common majors indicated by students transferring into UW-L are biology, exercise and sport science, recreation management and therapeutic recreation, psychology and management.
  • Approximately half of UW-L's new transfer students are coming from two-year colleges; whereas, the rest come from other four-year institutions.
  • Transfer students with high school hometowns 50 miles or less from La Crosse earn lower median GPAs at UW-L than do those from greater than 50 miles away.

Faculty Emerita Mary Elizabeth Cason dies

Mary Elizabeth Cason, longtime faculty member in UW-L's Department of Education, died on Monday, April 15. She taught mathematics education and curriculum for teachers at UW-L and retired in 2006. Faculty Emeritus Jack Storlie dies

John Carter (Jack) Storlie died Saturday, May 4. Storlie began his career at UW-L in 1959 teaching chemistry.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made either to the “John Storlie Scholarship in Computer Science” at UW-La Crosse Foundation or to the “Staff Appreciation” fund at the Gundersen Lutheran Foundation. (Work for UW-L's Adopt-a-Highway crew gets underway around 6 p.m. on scheduled dates at the intersection of Korn Clements Road and Highway 33. The more than 2-mile route on Highway 33 travels through Middle Ridge to Korn Coulee Road, near the La Crosse-Monroe county line. The group meets for a potluck reception following the cleanup. Bring a dish to pass. The crew is open to all university employees and retirees, and their families. Participants should wear appropriate clothing and gloves.
