Dumpster Diversion diverts a lot

The La Crosse County landfill will see a lot less furniture — and neighborhoods around campus look a lot less junky — all thanks to the university’s Move Out Sustainability Team.

Over two weekends earlier this month, MOST held the Dumpster Diversion — setting up drop-off sites in the campus area for students. The event was an enormous success, says Andrew Londre, co-founder of MOST and County Board Supervisor. “We look forward to building on this success in the future,” says Londre.

The collections included

  • Five 40-yard dumpsters of “stuff that would have ended up on curbs and boulevards of La Crosse — things like dirty, damaged couches and mattresses/box frames, and old furniture,” notes Londre.
  • A semi and a half of donations to Goodwill — things like clothes, furniture, and a random assortment of other items
  • Two tons of recycled TVs and other electronics.

Partners

Along with Londre, this year’s Dumpster Diversion partners included: Olson Apartments, WAFER, Hunger Task Force, Easter Seals, Salvation Army, Dynamic Recycling, Benson Apartments and City Council Member Sara Sullivan. Students and faculty involved in organizing the effort include County Board Supervisor Karin Johnson, City Council member Katherine Svitavsky, junior Zack Lindquist and sophomore Aaron Perkins.
