Academic freedom: excerpts from the play 'How the World Began' set for Nov. 13

Theatre arts will present a staged reading and discuss excerpts from the play "How the World Began," by Catherine Trieschmann at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. The play shows a teacher who, without thinking, drops her own opinion into a classroom lecture, then finds herself in very hot water. The issue in the play is science versus Biblical teachings about the origins of the earth, but the complexities transfer to many situations. The reading will be followed by a discussion of the issues presented in the play. Join the discussion of the boundaries between the personal and the public, the factual and the opinion, and the requirements in a civil society for all voices to be heard. A junkie could describe a person suffering from drug addiction, most commonly used to refer to a heroin addict, says Terry Wirkus, Information Technology Services. But at UW-L, a Jabber Junkie is someone who is using the new video communication and collaboration tool that UW-L ITS brought to campus this semester. Described by some as "Skype on Steroids," Jabber is free to the UW-L community. Jabber Junkie is available for Windows and Mac from software.uwlax.edu and Cisco Jabber for iPad in the App Store. Wirkus encourages everyone to download it and try it. Once faculty and staff and students have installed Jabber on their computers or iPads, users can call each other by name using the directory search. Try conducting a virtual meeting by having your group dial 81101, suggests Wirkus. Consider using Jabber to communicate rather than the telephone as a picture is worth a thousand words. For more information on how to use Jabber, how to set up a virtual meeting room, or create video recordings, contact Wirkus at 608.785.8049. It's actually healthy to be a Jabber Junkie, he says.News and upcoming events
