'Middletown" is a touching, funny reflection on being human

The UWL Theatre Arts will present Will Eno’s "Middletown," a delicate play about Anywhere, USA, and how human connection is essential for survival.

"Middletown" will run at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6-7 and 12-14 with a Sunday matinee at 2 Dec. 8. All performances are in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St.

"Middletown" is a deeply moving and funny play exploring the universe of a small American town. As a friendship develops between longtime resident John Dodge and new arrival Mary Swanson, the lives of the inhabitants of Middletown intersect in strange and poignant ways in a journey that takes them from the local library to outer space and points between. In this delicate, moving and wry amble along the collective road to nowhere, the folks are friendly, and the view of star-dappled skies and modest homes is familiar and comforting. Yet nestled amid all the homey detail is a prickly awareness of the awesome mystery of existence, the void whence everything came and into which it all may one day go.
