Learn about the effects of burning coal on campus at a Clean Energy Rally at noon Wednesday, April 20, by UW-L's Hoeschler Tower. The rally addresses burning coal on campus — from the extraction process to the pollution of burning coal —and sustainability in La Crosse. This includes strategies on how the UW-L community can work together to promote using clean energy options, such as solar, wind, geothermal and biomass. Speakers include UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow; Al Gedicks, Sociology; Guy Wolf, Multicultural Student Services; and student leaders, as well as La Crosse County Sustainability Coordinator Nick Nichols and Sierra Club representatives. The rally is being hosted by the No Coal Coalition in conjunction with the Environmental Council for Earth Week. If you're a native English-speaking student who is going to be in La Crosse this summer, consider applying to be a volunteer in the Summer Conversation Partner Program for the English as a Second Language Institute. Volunteers converse with international students to help them build confidence in their English-speaking ability. Conversation groups are held Monday, May 23, through Friday, July 15. Conversation groups meet Monday through Thursday for two 45-minute sessions — 2:45-3:30 p.m. and 3:30-4:15 p.m.). Volunteers are asked to help with two or more 45-minute sessions per week. Doctor Kurt R. Oettel of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center is the April presenter of the La Crosse BioResearch Forum. He will present "Lung Cancer and the Emerging Role of epidermal growth factor receptor" (EGFR) from 12:15-1 p.m. Monday, April 18, in the Overholt Auditorium, Gundersen Lutheran. Monthly forums are free and open to the public and are hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. UW-L Men's Volleyball Club claims national championship The UW-L Men's Volleyball Club was crowned the 2010-11 D2 National Champions in the National Collegiate Volleyball Conference. The team took home the first-place prize from the national tournament held April 7-9 in Houston. The national championship for the men bests a second place finish in 2009-10. The 2011-12 team won the national championship after completing a 12-2 regular season with signature wins over D1 opponents such as UW-Whitewater, Lakeland College, and D1 National Champion UW-Oshkosh. Team members include: Dan Chipman, Sam DeMerit, Kyle Kamperschroer, Nick Korom, Joel Manning, Dave Maternowski. Brad Mikulice, Eric Neuens and Frank Neuens. Keith Beyer, Chemistry; alumnus Michael Richardson; and student Breanna Ruesch; published "Phase Diagrams and Water Activities of Aqueous Ammonium Salts of Malonic Acid" in the Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2011, Vol. 115, 3042-3049. The research was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Hippert also presented the paper "Testimonio and (Ethnographic) Fiction: Using Critical Pedagogy in an Anthropology Class to Examine Representations of Andean Lives" at the 2nd Annual La Crosse Area Latina/o Collaborative Workshop on Teaching, Service, and Research, co-hosted by UW-L and Viterbo College, on April 2. Jean M. Janecki, Modern Languages, presented the paper "Representations of the Immigrant Other in Hispanic Film" at the conference. Student Leah Mortensen presented the paper "Integrating Indigenous Knowledge in Education Among the Pirwa of Huancarani, Bolivia" at the conference. The paper was based on research funded by an Undergraduate Research Grant from UW-L. Her faculty co-advisers were Hippert and Peter Stovall, Educational Studies. Maggie Lee McHugh, Student Support Services, and Jennifer Kosiak, Mathematics, presented “Mathematics and Social Justice: A New Approach to the Three R’s” at the Widening the Circle, Act 31: Teacher Education Symposium Conference in La Crosse April 8. Seven students on the UWLAX Triathlon team competed in the Triathlon Collegiate Nationals Competition in Tuscaloosa, Ala., April 9. The students included Zach Esselmen, Jake Hoffman, Amy Holterman, Rebecca Jacobson, Sara Kellen, Travis Pernsteiner and Kate Reimann. Gail Vaughn, Enterprise Services, presented "Using Database Level Functions in Custom PeopleSoft Processing" March 27-30 at the 2011 Alliance conference, a PeopleSoft Higher Education Users' Group national gathering, in Denver. Vaughn also hosted "Roots Gospel," a nine-hour series on African-American gospel music oldies on WLSU 88.9 FM. The station is currently re-broadcasting the series Sunday nights at 8 through early June.
