Banned Books Week 2018

Posted 5:34 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018

Celebrate your freedom to read during Banned Books Week, September 23-29! Murphy Library and the La Crosse Public Library have partnered tocelebrate this week with events that promote the value of free and open access to information and bring attention to the dangers of censoring books, ideas, and persons.  Events include:  The Metal Children: In partnership with the La Crosse Public Library and the Alternative Truth Project, this script reading and subsequent discussion will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25 at The Pump House in La Crosse. This is a powerful play about censorship and the challenge for urban and heartland America to understand each other. The Metal Children was written by Adam Rapp and premiered in May 2010 at the Vineyard Theater in New York City.  Freedom to Read – Read Out: Murphy Library’s Sixth Annual “Freedom to Read” event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26 in front of the Student Union. The public is invited to drop by during the event to listen to the readings or read from a banned book (see below for more information).  Volunteers are needed to read short passages (no more than five minutes) at the event. You may bring a banned book of your choice or there will be many examples available to choose from at the event. Those interested in reading for the program should complete the Volunteer to Read Form  or contact Marc Manke, Murphy Library, at mmanke@uwlax.edu.  All events are open to the public and are free of charge.
