Greek Life organizations annually volunteer treats, time for Rotary Lights

Megan Salvin laughed as she remembered when one of her first-year Alpha Xi Delta sorority sisters asking her “what is Rotary Lights?” The annual display of holiday lights is one of the can’t miss traditions for anyone in the La Crosse area. “It’s all about doing good for the community and spreading Christmas spirit, which I love,” says Salvin, the outgoing president of Alpha Xi Delta. Rotary Lights is powered completely by the local Rotary Club and hundreds of volunteers from numerous community groups. Several of those are UWL clubs and organizations, including Greek Life organizations Alpha Xi Delta and Delta Sigma Phi. https://youtu.be/eK1d4BKl39o “It’s really cool how we’re able to give back,” says Garrett Paulson, a member of Delta Sigma Phi. To support Rotary Lights, Delta Sigma Phi provides overnight security every night once setup begins until the lights come down. “We’re the only group allowed to do that,” says Paulson. Alpha Xi Delta joins in a cookie baking effort every year, making 150 dozen cookies for the other volunteers. The two groups also decorate a tree at Rotary Lights and held a competitive food drive this year to support the event. “Knowing that so many groups of people came together and we’re one of those, makes me so unbelievably proud,” says Salvin.
