The UW-L Department of Theatre Arts production of “The Mental Children” is an unforgettable drama that explores what happens when fiction becomes a matter of life and death.
“The Metal Children” will show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, Saturday, April 26 and Thursday, May 1, through Saturday, May 3. Matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27 and Sunday, May 4 in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts.
In small-town America, a young adult novel about teen pregnancy is banned by the local school board, igniting a fierce and violent debate over abortion, religious beliefs and modern feminism. When the novel’s directionless New York City author, Tobin Falmouth, arrives in town to defend the book, he finds “The Metal Children” has inspired a cult-like following among the local teens who have begun bleaching their hair, purposely getting pregnant and setting lawns on fire. As the rebellion escalates with vandalism, violence and even death, Tobin wonders if he will make it out of Midlothia alive.
