Jeans Day logo.Jeans Day is Friday, Aug. 31; wear your LIVEMAROON gear!

UW-L is one of many local organizations that participate in the monthly “Jeans Day” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive our donations. In return for a $1 (suggested donation) UW-L employees may wear jeans to work Friday, Aug. 31. Wear your LIVEMAROON shirt too. You may contribute even if you don’t wear jeans.  Let’s show our community how generous we can be! The charities receiving the August contributions are:
  • “Steppin’ Out in Pink”- A walk for local breast cancer research and awareness. This event was the idea of a local breast cancer survivor who wanted to do something for the cause but wanted the funds to stay local.
  • American Heart Association – The Go Red for Women Campaign in La Crosse educates women about heart disease and prevention. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in women over the age of 20, killing more women each year than all types of cancer combined. This campaign raises funds for this critical community outreach, as well as for research aimed at improvements in women’s cardiovascular prevention and treatment.

In the News label.
A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news.
"Our view: Put education above incarceration," Editorial, La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 21. It's a handy little ditty to help you remember how your tax dollars are spent by the state of Wisconsin. The biggest share of the money that you send to the state goes to incarcerate, educate and medicate. But what happens when we spend more to incarcerate than we do to educate the students in the University of Wisconsin System? ... "La Crosse teachers blend technology and teaching," Wisconsin Public Radio, Aug. 21. As students grow up surrounded by technology and dependent on the Internet, educators rethink the way they teach. The days of a teacher lecturing in front of the classroom for hours may be over. That is how UW-La Crosse's School of Education Director Marcie Wycoff-Horn sees it. She says teachers need to meet the younger generation's learning needs ... "Study finds Zumba burns more calories than power yoga, kickboxing ..." The Herald, HeraldOnline.com, Aug. 22. The American Council on Exercise A study by the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, ... "UW-L demolishes homes for future projects," WKBT La Crosse, Aug. 23. Several houses were knocked down on Wednesday on the UW-La Crosse campus as the university prepares for several upcoming building ... "UW-L researchers' hunt for lead in marsh continues," La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 23. Gun enthusiasts of the early 20th century riddled the La Crosse River marsh with lead. And decades after the last trap shoot, traces of the toxic metal remain. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse researchers have found high lead levels in the sediment where La Crosse Gun Club members frequently shot skeet ... "UW La Crosse processes excavation artifacts," WXOW, Aug. 22. Onalaska has been a site for ancient civilizations for hundreds of years. One of these ancient sites was uncovered during the Highway 53 reconstruction project in Onalaska. Now, artifacts from this site are being painstakingly cleaned and categorized by Archaeologists at UW-La Crosse's Mississippi Valley Archaeological Center ...
