Jane K. Fernandes, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina Asheville, speaks at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Admission is free. Fernandes will share her experience of the personal and systematic impact of white privilege and power in the deaf community. She will also explore oppression system within the deaf community, as well as the impact they have on racial justice. Born without hearing, Fernandes first learned American Sign Language (ASL) while a graduate student. At the time, her roommate was a hearing person who was learning ASL. She invited Fernandes to a meeting made up of mostly people without hearing. Pleasantly surprised by the animated atmosphere of the signing community, Fernandes learned ASL herself. With the new skill, Fernandes embarked on a professional life devoted to creating an inclusive relationship between the hearing and the deaf. As an academic and administrator in Honolulu, she created a certification program for ASL interpreters at Kapio’lani Community College and successfully advocated for the acceptance of American Sign Language as a foreign language by the University of Hawai’i. Her most prominent accomplishment at the Hawai’i School for the Deaf and Blind was increasing the profile of the Center, moving it from a modest, specialized resource to an organization serving deaf, blind, and deaf-blind students throughout Hawaii. As an administrator at Gallaudet University, Fernandes created research priorities that focused on literacy for all children with hearing issues, the transition from high school to higher education and careers, and family involvement in a deaf child’s life. In October 2006, she was selected as president designate of Gallaudet University. Following protests, the university’s board of trustees later voted to terminate the appointment. Fernandes began in Asheville in July 2008. In addition to serving as provost, Fernandes is a tenured professor of education and serves as a Senior Fellow with the Johnnetta B. Cole Global Diversity & Inclusion Institute, founded at Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, N.C. Throughout her career, Fernandes has worked to foster bilingual American Sign Language-English literacy in deaf students, along with promoting interdisciplinary teaching and learning practices, and advocating for racial justice. She works to develop inclusive schools of racial justice where all students are welcomed and educated. If you go — Who: Jane K.
