Distinguished journalist Soledad O’Brien will speak at UW-La Crosse at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Recreational Eagle Center. Admission is $4 for UW-L students and $10 for others. Prices increase $2 the day of the event. Journalist Soledad O’Brien will talk about her experience as a reporter and how it has shaped her perspective of America at a UW-La Crosse presentation. New Music Festival is Nov. 5-7
UW-L’s College of Liberal Studies and the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers will be presenting the 2013 La Crosse New Music Festival Nov. 5, 6 and 7. Concerts will be presented Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 in Annett Recital Hall, Center for the Arts building. The Wednesday evening concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 111 N. 9th St., and will feature choral and organ music. Read more »

Homophile movement in Mexico City is topic of Nov. 6 talk
A talk on campus Wednesday, Nov. 6, will discuss the role affluent, professional same-sex-attracted males in Mexico City played in developing the homophile culture from the 1930s to the 60s. UW-L Professor Victor Macias-Gonzalez, History and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies departments, leads the discussion Homophile Movement in Mexico City, 1940-1960" at 4 p.m. in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. Termed homophile this mid-20th-century precursor to the LGBT movement disarmed critics by emphasizing love and friendship (-phile) between same-sex individuals, rather than sex. Adherents changed sexual consciousness through their identity politics and publications, and combated public hostility to same-sex friendships, relationships and desire. “Boy Gets Girl“ by Rebecca Gilman will show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 9, with matinee performances at 2 o’clock Sunday, Nov. 10, in Frederick Theatre in the lower level of Morris Hall.
Theresa, a work-oriented woman in her late thirties, decides to get back into the dating game when she meets Tony, a charming, attractive man who seems very eager to make a connection. Although Theresa quickly realizes she is not ready for a commitment and gracefully excuses herself, Tony is not willing to let her go so easily. He sends her cards, flowers, and even visits her at work.
With each rejection, he becomes more persistent and forceful. As Theresa becomes more paranoid she is faced with difficult questions. How will she get her life back? Or even more terrifying, will she ever be able to?

Show you Remember Everyone Deployed by wearing a RED shirt Monday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day. The UW-L Veteran's Club is selling red shirts on Thursdays until Veterans Day. The group wants to raise awareness about military service members — past and present — and build morale. The money raised will help the Student Veteran’s Association host more events; some will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. Become more involved with issues that affect veterans and UW-L by joining the Veteran’s Club. Meetings are at 5:30 p.m. Thursdays in 257 Cartwright Center. Service members, dependents and civilians are also welcome to use the Veterans Lounge in 264 Cartwright Center. The lounge includes an entertainment center, three computer workstations and plenty of study space. The lounge also has an information pamphlet collection for veterans, a library and a movie collection. Drug discovery from venomous marine snails is topic of Nov. 11 lecture
An assistant professor in chemistry at Hunter College and CUNY-Graduate Center will talk about how novel peptides from venomous marine snails are being used as tools for manipulating cell signaling in the nervous system. Chemical biologist Mande Holford will present "Lessons From Nature: Drug Discovery From Venomous Marine Snails" at a free lecture at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in 1400 Centennial Hall. A reception will be held at 5 p.m. The presentation is co-sponsored by a Visiting Scholar of Color Grant from the Provost's Office, the pre-med club and the physics and biology departments. Nick Nicklaus, Residence Life, received the William B. Sweet Distinguished Service Award for the Upper Midwest Region of the Association of College and University Housing Officer. It is the organization's most prestigious award and is presented to individuals who exemplify excellence and commitment to their work. Nicklaus received the award in St. Louis at the regional housing association's annual conference Oct. 23-25.
Yang Cha Thao, master's student, Student Affairs Administration, was awarded the Daniel Siler Memorial Student Leadership Award by the Wisconsin College Personnel Association on Oct. 18 in Wisconsin Dells.
Jörg Vianden, Student Affairs Administration, presented a plenary talk at the annual conference of the Wisconsin College Personnel Association in Wisconsin Dells on Oct. 17. Vianden also served as Faculty in Residence at the conference.

Classified employee deadline to submit annual leave conversions is Dec. 2
Classified annual leave conversion gives classified staff an opportunity choose how to use unused annual leave (vacation). Based on eligibility, classified employees can bank annual leave in a sabbatical account or receive cash, or a combination of both. Eligible classified staff can find the form on “My UWSystem” portal in the Time and Absence area under the “Statements” tab. The form must be completed and submitted to HR by Monday, Dec. 2. Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) is a development tool that communities have been able to use to help pay for infrastructure improvements that encourage development for 40 years in Wisconsin. Local governments have increased use of the TIF in the last 20 years. We talk to the lead author of a report done by UW-La Crosse and UW Extension that measures the impact of TIF in the Greater La Crosse area. Quiet, silent study spaces now in the library
To meet the needs of students who are looking for quiet places to study, Murphy Library has several designated "quiet study" areas and is piloting a "silent study" area as well.
Quiet study areas can be found in the following locations in the library:
- Most of the second floor is reserved for quiet study and includes areas with large tables, individual study carrels and beanbag chairs.
- The basement is a quiet study area with a variety of seating options and the benefit of less traffic than any other floor of the library.
- Private, individual study rooms are located along the outside walls of the east side of the basement. These rooms are big enough for one person, have power and wireless, and have a door that closes to keep noise out. Some of the rooms are reserved for graduate students, but the rest are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition to the quiet spaces mentioned above, the library, as a pilot project, is converting room 12 in the basement into a "silent study room" for the most focused study needs. Students may enter and leave the room as they wish. Talking is not allowed. Nor is the use of cell phones, music players or any other devices or activities that generate sound. The silent room observes a more strict level of silence than the library's other quiet study spaces.
The first floor of the library is not a quiet study area. Students are encouraged to let library staff know if people are not observing quiet and silent study area rules.
OCW Organization of Campus Women hosts the third Annual Cookie Off!
OCW is hosting this cookie baking contest to raise money for its student scholarship fund. he event will be held from 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall Contest requirements Your team will:- Bake 100 taster-size cookies
- Share your cookies in which tasters pay $5.00 to participate and vote for their favorite cookie
- Decorate your display table
- Assign at least one team member the task of monitoring the table during the event
- Participant in a promotional photo
- Help promote and sell tickets for the event across campus. Each team will be sent a packet of 10 tickets to sell. All unsold tickets need to be returned one week prior to the event
UWL 100 Freshman Seminar class in conjunction with Golden Key collected 17 boxes and three paper bags full of goods for the Campus Food Pantry.
