James E. Jackson III, who has performed worldwide with quartets and as a soloist, will be featured during a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Viterbo University Fine Arts Center, 929 Jackson St., La Crosse. The concert is free and open to the public. As a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Band, Jackson is the principal euphonium and a soloist with the acclaimed military band. He will perform “Songs of a Wayfarer” by Gustav Mahler and Gordon Jacob’s “Fantasia for Euphonium” with the Wind Ensemble. “Songs of a Wayfarer” was originally composed for voice and moves from despair to joy to more despair and finally to everything being well. “Fantasia for Euphonium” is a challenging, virtuosic piece for a soloist. The Wind Ensemble, directed by UWL Faculty Member J. Thomas Seddon IV, will also feature “Slava!” by Leonard Bernstein. The composition brings the full forces of the ensemble featuring trombone, piccolo and trumpet solos combined with percussive dance rhythms. The Wind Ensemble will also perform a classic band work by Gustav Holst, “First Suite in Eb,” the first piece composed specifically for the concert band. The piece is in the English style and has three movements. The concert will conclude with Jackson conducting the popular march, “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.
